    Collecting the award to another standing ovation, John Legend said: "Nina Simone said it was an artist's duty to reflect the times we live. Selma may be 50 years ago, but it is now, because the struggle for justice is right now.

    "The voting rights they fought for are being compromised right now, today. We live in the most incarcerated country in the world. There are more black men in prison than were in slavery.

    "When people are marching with our song, we tell you we see you - and we march on."

    Idina Menzel and John Travolta are together on stage - a year after the latter famously stumbled on Menzel's name when introducing her perform Let It Go.

    Introducing them, host Neil Patrick Harris quips: "Benedict Cumberbatch - the sound you get when you ask John Travolta to pronounce Ben Affleck."

    Backstage, best supporting actress winner Patricia Arquette expanded on what she said about equality in her speech and called for changes in the law.

    "It is time for women. Equal means equal."

    And referring to the obsession with Oscar fashion, she said her dress had been made by her childhood friend - who had been the first person who had ever asked her what she wanted to be when he grew up.

    Her answer: an actress.

    After Edward Snowden film CitizenFour wins, Neil Patrick Harris quips: "Edward Snowden can't be here tonight for some treason."

    Director Laura Poitras thanked Snowden - the focus of the documentary, who is currently in hiding, "for his courage" and paid tribute "to many other whistleblowers".

    The Oscar for film editing marked the third award of the night for Whiplash.

    Two weeks after picking up the Bafta, Tom Cross praised stars Miles Teller and JK Simmons for "delivering gold to cutting room every day" and director Damien Chazelle for "never once throwing a chair at my head but always pushing to make it better".

    Birdman just got its first win of the night, while Budapest Hotel now has three - a third of those it is up for.

    Among others, Mickey Rooney, James Garner, Maya Angelou, Richard Attenborough, Robin Williams, Lauren Bacall and Bob Hoskins were all mentioned.

    It's the second consecutive Oscar for Emmanuel Lubezki, who won the same award for Gravity last year.

    He said he wanted to share the "fantastic honour" with all the cast and crew, but particularly Birdman director Alejandro G Inarritu "for your curiousity, your passion and your friendship".
