Neil Patrick Harris is giving away tricks of the trade by saying hello to the seat-fillers - the average Joe (or Josephine) who is brought in to fill the seat of anyone who pops to the loo or is lucky enough to win an award.

Ida director Pawel Pawlikowski is the first person to have his speech curtailed and be played the "get off" music. However Pawel had other ideas and refused to budge until he thanked everyone he wanted to. Surely he must be the first person to be played off twice in the same speech?

"This film is all about silence and contemplation and here we are at the epicentre of noise. Life is full of surprises," he said.

He also reflected Whiplash had been keeping him busy during awards season: "It's more tiring than the lean times, when you get more sleep and you're not flying around everywhere."
