    Quote Message

To be nominated by my fellow Brits really means a great deal to me, and to be alongside such wonderful women too. This is such a great year for women in film and I am absolutely thrilled to be included! Thank you Bafta!

Kate Winslet - best actress nominee

    Quote Message

Very excited and honoured to be considered by Bafta this year alongside such outstanding talent. Congratulations to Kate, Aaron [Sorkin] and all the nominees - looking forward to celebrating with you on the night.

Michael Fassbender - best actor nominee

    Quote Message

Thank you very much for this nomination. My scenes were pretty much all with Tom Hanks who was not only a joy to support in his subtle and generous performance but also a great teacher through example about film acting. It was hard to go wrong with such a wonderful script and with a true genius directing.

Mark Rylance - best supporting actor nominee

    Quote Message

It's a huge honour to be nominated for this award. So many of its past recipients are filmmakers I deeply admire. I think it's a tremendous credit to my wonderful cast and team who were so generous and creative in helping me make the film.

Stephen Fingleton - best debut by a British writer, director or producer for The Survivalist

  3. Will it be a Baa-fta for Shaun the Sheep?published at 12:53

Shaun the Sheep MovieImage source, Aardman

The Shaun the Sheep Movie is up against Inside Out and Minions in the Bafta animated film category.

Richard Starzak, who co-wrote and directed the Aardman film, told us:

    Quote Message

I'm chuffed to bits! I overslept this morning and I was woken by loads of pings on my phone and I realised I’d just missed the announcement."

He said he was astonished at the age range of Shaun the Sheep fans around the world.

    Quote Message

I get letters from all age groups – from young kids to a woman in her late 80s. I love the fact that it's got such a broad demograhic. It varies from country to country. In Germany it seems to be 30-year old mothers more than the kids. I was just in Japan and all the cool kids had Shaun the Sheep t-shirts.”

And how does he fancy Shaun's chances against Inside Out and Minions?

    Quote Message

Leicester have beaten some of the top teams, so who knows? I’m just going to enjoy the ceremony. I'll go and dust off the DJ!"

  4. Brie Larson shares Bafta lovepublished at 12:40

    RoomImage source, StudioCanal

Room has been winning rave reviews, just as the best-selling novel it's based on was greeted on its release.

Brie Larson is nominated for best actress for her portrayal of a mother who is kept in captivity with her young son for years.

Irish novelist Emma Donoghue was brought on board to adapt her own book for the screenplay.

    Quote Message

Thank you Bafta for this wonderful acknowledgment. I'm proud to be a part of a film that has touched so many people around the world and to share this moment with Lenny, Emma, Jacob and the entire cast and crew of Room.

    Brie Larson

    Quote Message

I'm over the moon to be nominated for a Bafta for adapted screenplay for Room. As a first-timer, to find myself in the company of such superb scriptwriters is an honour I'll never forget. But much of the credit should go to our extraordinary director Lenny Abrahamson, my teacher and mentor in filmcraft. I'm also delighted that Bafta has recognised the astounding performance of Brie Larson.

  5. Brooklyn team 'proud' of successpublished at 12:22

    Julie WaltersImage source, FoxSearchlight

Brooklyn garnered six nominations in total today, including best actress for Saiorse Ronan and best supporting actress for Julie Walters.

The tearjerker of a film, set in the 1950s, tells the story of a young Irish woman who emigrates to America and falls in love, but is torn between her new life and the call of her homeland.

Some of the team were overjoyed at the Bafta news.

    Quote Message

What a wonderful surprise, thrilled to be nominated. And proud to be included alongside these great women and their powerful performances.

    Julie Walters

    Quote Message

I am so delighted for everyone on Brooklyn. It was such a collaborative project.

  6. Who are the bookies backing?published at 12:08

Bookmakers have been quick off the mark - and one is hotly tipping Leonardo DiCaprio to take the best actor prize.

William Hill has given him odds of 4/9 to win for The Revenant, while Eddie Redmayne is 11/2.

Brie Larson is winning the odds for best actress at 10/11, followed by Saoirse Ronan on 2/1.

Spotlight is far and away the favourite for best film, at 8/13, with The Big Short behind it on 7/2.

If anybody’s got a copy of the the nine-category nominated Bridge of Spies, could they send me it? I’ve only seen the incredibly shallow, turgid, soporific version.

    David Blair

Very disappointed with Carol: Tediously slow, no plot progression, no humour, no drama....just two hours spent watching a relationship with no basis for closeness other than physical desire. Separation imminent! Only interest was when the child's future was involved. Two out of 10.

    John Oldham

Stunned not to see Spotlight with more nominations! Best film this year.

  8. British Bafta snubspublished at 11:45

    Tom Courtney and Charlotte Rampling

The Guardian's Peter Bradshaw is among those decrying Bafta's decision not to include, external Charlotte Rampling or Tom Courteney for their performances in 45 Years.

    He said:

    Quote Message

It’s excruciating that Charlotte Rampling and Tom Courtenay, so superb in Andrew Haigh’s marital crisis drama 45 Years, have been left off the best actress and best actor lists. Just as with Timothy Spall’s non-appearance for Mr Turner last year, it seems Bafta has obtusely found a way to overlook world-class British acting talent - although Maggie Smith has rightly been noticed for her imperious performance in The Lady in the Van.

Others on Twitter are equally miffed at their omission.

  18. Carol producers 'thrilled'published at 09:33

The producers of period drama Carol have got busy diaries at the moment, as their film continues to dominate at many awards ceremonies.

    Quote Message

We are thrilled for Todd Haynes Phyllis Nagy and the entire Carol team and of course the magnificent Cate Blanchett and Rooney Mara on the eve of the Golden Globe awards in Los Angeles that Bafta has chosen to honour the film in such an incredible way with nine nominations!

    Quote Message

It's fitting that with such strong UK connections at the initial development stage and especially with the incredible support of Film 4 throughout the entire process that the film has gained such an overwhelming endorsement from Bafta. Thank you.

  20. Analysis: Period drama rules, but no joy for Joypublished at 09:09

    Tim Masters
    Arts and Entertainment correspondent

This year's Bafta best film nominations are dominated by period American dramas, most of them based on true stories.

Carol and Bridge of Spies, which lead the pack with nine nominations apiece, are both dramas about secret lives that play out in the 1950s.

Last year's best actor winner Eddie Redmayne is back this year in the same category for his role as transgender pioneer Lili Elbe in The Danish Girl.

His co-star Alicia Vikander receives a double nomination this year for both Danish Girl and sci-fi thriller Ex Machina.

The leading actress field includes Dame Maggie Smith, getting her 13th Bafta film nod for The Lady in the Van. Her first was in 1959, when she was up for "most promising newcomer".

Surprise omissions include Charlotte Rampling for her powerful performance in 45 Years, Carey Mulligan for British period drama Suffragette and Jennifer Lawrence, who has been Oscar-tipped for Joy.

45 Years can console itself with a single nod for outstanding British film, but Joy and Suffragette failed to secure any nominations at all.
