    Ennio Morricone

The nominees for best film score already own a whopping 15 Bafta trophies between them.

Top of the heap is Star Wars tunesmith John Williams, who won the first of seven awards for Jaws in 1975.

He's up for The Force Awakens, which revisits several of the themes from his Bafta-winning Star Wars score.

Joining him is spaghetti western maestro Ennio Morricone (pictured above) - who scored Quentin Tarantino's Hateful Eight.

The Italian composer already has five Baftas to his name, including wins for The Untouchables and Cinema Paradiso. Notoriously, however, he has never picked up an Oscar.

Japan's Ryuichi Sakamoto is cited for the chilling soundtrack to The Revenant - his first nomination since 1989's The Last Emperor.

Rounding off the shortlist are Thomas Newman for Bridge Of Spies and Iceland's Johann Johannsson - whose malicious, minimalist score for crime thriller Sicario reinforced the on-screen tension.

Alicia Vikander, who received two acting nominations for The Danish Girl and Ex Machina (pictured), said:

    Quote Message

I am truly honoured to receive these Bafta nominations. The Danish Girl and Ex Machina have been such gifts of projects for me. The fact that both of these projects were driven from the UK, with a predominantly British cast and crew and that both these films have been so generously recognised by Bafta today, makes this even more poignant for me. I feel extremely grateful, thank you Bafta!

  20. Who won last year?published at 07:11

Eddie Redmayne and Julianne MooreImage source, EPA

To jog your memory, here's a run down of last year's big Bafta winners:

    • Best actor - Eddie Redmayne, Theory of Everything
    • Best actress - Julianne Moore, Still Alice
    • Best supporting actor - JK Simmons, Whiplash
    • Best supporting actress - Patricia Arquette, Boyhood
    • Best film - Boyhood
    • Best director - Richard Linklater, Boyhood

While all four actors went on to pick up Oscar for their roles, Richard Linklater found himself on the sidelines as the voters favoured Alejandro G Inarritu's Birdman in both the best film and director categories.

Inarritu's bloody western The Revenant should feature heavily in today's nominations.
