Accepting the award for outstanding British film for his movie I, Daniel Blake, director Ken Loach thanked the people of Newcastle, where the film is set, and said:

    Quote Message

Thank you to the Academy for recognising the message of what the film says, that the most vulnerable people are treated by this government with a callous brutality that is disgraceful. It's a brutality that extends to keeping out refugee children that we promised to help, and that's a disgrace too.

Stephen Fry has got things off to a great start, appearing on stage at the end of a terrific performance by Cirque du Soleil.

He's on fine form with his opening monologue, joking that the Royal family are still recovering from finding out they were related to Danny Dyer (which was revealed in a recent episode of Who Do You Think You Are).

The Duke and Duchess of Cambridge are in attendance tonight to present a special award to Mel Brooks.

Fry joked as he looked out to the audience that he could see "row after row of the most overrated people on the planet, in their beautiful borrowed evening wear".

There was also some fine wordplay on display - Fry said: "The arrival of Arrival left us wondering if we could find a rival to rival Arrival."

Spotting Casey Affleck in the audience, Fry joked: "Affleck is without a doubt one of the finest actors in his family" - a reference to his famous brother Ben.

He also joked that British people had enjoyed watching Emily Blunt in The Girl on the Train - "Particularly commuters in southern England who have never seen a moving train."

The moment she knew the film was special?

When we went to the Venice Film Festival , that was the first time I saw it with an audience. That was an overwhelming moment. And very hot! The director Damien Chazelle and I were sweaty and teary.

He told the BBC: "It's a film about people whose lives are thrown into chaos by the social security system, so it's strange to find it amongst this event of glitz and glamour."

But, he said, the movie's nomination "gives the film prominence, it gives it a profile".

"We've been very lucky with awards this year, so more people know about it, maybe more people will go and see it," he added.

JK Rowling tells the BBC's Lizo Mzimba she is "genuinely over the moon" about Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them's five nominations tonight.

"It's amazing, even if we don't win that is a huge nomination to get so i really am thrilled," she said.

Speaking about returning to the Harry Potter universe for the franchise, she said: "You know the expectation is massive, the bar is very high, the only reason to return was if you had a story you still wanted to tell, and I did have and its been incredible."

She also said she is currently in the process of casting the young Dumbledore for the next film. "He is my favourite character in the whole series. We're right in the middle of that right now," she said.
