There was only one (continuous) camera on George MacKay and Dean-Charles Chapman during the whole of the 1917 - making it a strong contender for best cinematography - but there are loads on them tonight.

The young British pair have been pretty much been joined at the hip in recent weeks while promoting the new film.

For this reason, BBC Radio 5 Live's Colin Paterson described them as "the new Ant and Dec" earlier on his pre-awards show.

    What do you reckon?

  2. No host, no problempublished at 00:19 Greenwich Mean Time 10 February 2020

Maya Rudolph, Tina Fey and Amy Poehler kicked off last year's ceremonyImage source, Getty

For a second year in a row there will be no official host of the ceremony.

Last year, Tina Fey, Amy Poehler and Maya Rudolph delivered an opening monologue - so look out for something similar - but otherwise it was left to different celebrities to introduce each category.

At the recent Golden Globe Awards, Ricky Gervais was on fine form entertaining and offending LA's finest in equal measure. He (half) jokingly warned the stars not to get political with their acceptance speeches.

He's at it again tonight on Twitter, as you can see below.

  3. Little Women is 'still pressing and urgent'published at 00:14 Greenwich Mean Time 10 February 2020

Noah Baumbach and Greta GerwigImage source, AFP/Getty

Greta Gerwig has just walked the red carpet with her partner and fellow nominee Noah Baumbach, who directed Marriage Story.

Her own film Little Women is up for best picture.

She's just told journalists that the coming of age period drama, adapted from the 1868 novel of the same name by Louisa May Alcott, is more relevant today than ever.

"Even though it’s 150 years old," said Greta, "it's still modern and pressing and urgent".

It's certain that the best director winner will be a man, after that category's nominees were all male for the ninth year out of the past 10.

  4. 'How my cello became Joaquin Phoenix's Joker'published at 00:13 Greenwich Mean Time 10 February 2020

    Hildur GudnadottirImage source, Getty

Anyone who's seen Joker will know know how the music plays an integral part.

It's probably been the reason you haven't slept properly since too.

Hildur Gudnadottir is the only woman nominated for best score at this year's Oscars.

Read more about how her cello put everyone on edge (in a good way).

  5. Diane Warren is at the Oscars (for the 11th time)published at 00:08 Greenwich Mean Time 10 February 2020

Songwriter Dianne Warren's nod in best original song (for I'm Standing With You from the film Breakthrough) is her 11th Oscar nomination.

    ELEVENTH.

    And she's still never won.

She looks amazing in silver on the red carpet, alongside fellow composer Paul Antonelli.

  6. Can Parasite steal it from Sam Mendes?published at 00:04 Greenwich Mean Time 10 February 2020

    ParasiteImage source, Curzon

Bong Joon-Ho's South Korean social comedy thriller Parasite only arrived in UK cinemas this week but it's swept the board at pretty much all the award ceremonies leading up to the Oscars.

It's second favourite to win the big best picture prize, behind Sir Sam Mendes' World War One epic 1917.

The BBC's Will Gompertz liked it. He gave it four stars, and he doesn't give those stars away lightly.

See what else he had to say about it here.

  7. Billie Eilish is wearing Cha. Nel.published at 23:59 Greenwich Mean Time 9 February 2020

Singer Billie Eilish is performing at tonight's ceremony.

We're not sure yet what she's going to sing but many are hoping she might take the opportunity to premiere the new James Bond theme.

For now, she's looking amazing on the red carpet in a white Chanel jacket - complete with the "Cha" printed on one hand and "Nel" on the other.

Let's just hope she's not planning on texting or tweeting anytime soon with those nails...

  8. Should the Oscars rip up the rulebook on the ceremony?published at 23:57 Greenwich Mean Time 9 February 2020

    OscarsImage source, Getty Images

This year's ceremony, which begins at around (01:00 GMT), is set to be another TV marathon.

FYI, last year's ceremony was a whopping three hours and 23 minutes and was watched by 29.6 million people in the US - a 12% boost from 2018's viewing figures.

But it was still the second-smallest audience recorded for an Oscars broadcast - part of a general fall in award ceremonies ratings, as more people prefer to discover the highlights online rather than sit through the whole thing.

So for all our sakes let's hopes there's gonna be some memorable and shareable moments this year.

The two young stars of Jojo Rabbit - Roman Griffin Davis and Archie Yates - are putting their older peers to shame with their extremely dapper tuxes.

Their film is nominated in six categories tonight, and is a strong contender for best adapted screenplay in particular.

  13. So, who's going to win the Oscars?published at 23:42 Greenwich Mean Time 9 February 2020

The world won't find out for another few hours, but these three people already know.

Executives from PriceWaterhouseCoopers (PWC), the company in charge of counting the votes, are walking up the red carpet carrying the bags that contain the all important envelopes.

Let's hope this year the correct envelope is opened when the best picture winner is announced, following Envelopegate in 2017.

Dern is highly likely to win best supporting actress tonight for her performance in Marriage Story.

Readers in the UK who are currently battling Storm Ciara will be forgiven for not crying too many tears over the fact Hollywood's finest have been getting a wee bit wet on their way to the Dolby Theatre in Los Angeles, California, for tonight's ceremony.

Our reporter Helen Bushby has arrived early on the red carpet, which is thankfully undercover.

They actually had covers over it earlier, like they do at Wimbledon.

No sign of Sir Cliff though.

  20. Who's on the red carpet?published at 23:15 Greenwich Mean Time 9 February 2020

Normally, the first people to turn up on a red carpet are the least famous. The first hour or so is a chance for the C-listers to get some publicity and have their picture taken before the big stars arrive.

That's not the case at the Ocsars.

Given that it's Hollywood's biggest and most prestigious night of the year, celebrities are as keen to be seen at the event as possible. The ceremony may still be nearly two hours away, but the stars are out in force, giving interviews to press and posing for photographers.
