It was an early alarm for some of Sir Elton John's biggest fans.

Gregg Rathbone from Coventry was first in line to make sure he got the best spot on the farm for Elton's final UK performance of his farewell tour. He managed it by arriving at the Pyramid Stage at 4am this morning.

Gregg says he's had five hours' sleep over the past few days but he's hoping adrenaline will get him through to see what will no doubt be an emotional performance.

He's one of several people wearing the same bedazzled baseball outfit that Elton originally donned at the Dodger Stadium in Los Angeles in 1975.

    Lil Nas X

US rapper Lil Nas X made quite the arrival in a gladiatorial outfit with added flares.

He said he was "happy" to be back having performed his record-busting viral hit Old Town Road, alongside Miley Cyrus and her dad Billy Ray, here in 2019.

The song became the longest-running number one in US chart history.

He's just gone off stage and returned, with his entourage, singing it topless on a giant prop horse and now all hell has broken loose.

The track then ended with snippet of Dick Dale's Misirlou (or Black Eyed Peas for younger readers) then into a bit of Nirvana.

It's a breathless genre-straddlng party, complete with lots of twerking.

It's also reminded me, I must go to the gym this week.

US rapper Lil Nas X's massive hit Montero (Call Me By Your Name) was one of the first tracks he played.

  9. Heavy metal classics at the chilled-out acoustic stagepublished at 18:58 British Summer Time 25 June 2023

    Mark Savage
    Music correspondent at Glastonbury

Spurred on by the breakout success of their YouTube series Sunday Lunch, punk icon Toyah Wilcox and her husband Robert Fripp, of King Crimson fame, have just played their first ever Glastonbury festival.

The only problem was, they were booked to play the acoustic stage, and their set revolves around covers of heavy metal classics like Metallica’s Enter Sandman and Black Sabbath’s Paranoid.

“There was such a serenity until we went on,” laughs Toyah. “We've got three guitarists. I've come from punk rock. It was a big sound.”

The singer says she enjoys tackling those testosterone-fuelled rock classics without flipping the gender of the lyrics.

“I have a masculine soul, I admit it. I've never felt lady-like at all. So to sing songs that are written by powerful men, and to sing them in the male gender, I find very empowering,” Toyah says.

There's a fun-looking daytime rave going on on the Other Stage right now.

Becky Hill's stage backdrop, like her outfit is adorned in smiley faces.

She's just a happy person, that's all that that represents; nothing more.

Backed by a string section and choir, she's racing through a setlist packed with big, bouncing beats and bass-lines, like her number one hit Gecko (Overdrive) and Crazy What Love Can Do - her collab with David Guetta and Ella Henderson.

Even a slight pause to fix an, ahem, "wardrobe malfunction" cannot stop the party.

"I love dance music, it runs through my veins," she declared.

The singer recently revealed she had put her wedding plans on hold, external in order to focus on her music career this summer and the Glasto crowd seem delighted that she did.

Not sure what her partner thinks, mind.

She's now belting out a cover of Candi Staton's You've Got the Love, which she dedicated to the "black queer community" that first came up with the house music genre in Chicago in the early 1980s.

Gena Rose, who sings in the choir, says it was "just magical; we'll never forget it" and adds "it was "mind-blowing" to be invited.

"It was the best moment ever; just absolutely amazing, over-the-Moon excited," she says.

"The people were actually chanting for more; that's the best possible response you can get.

"I was living my best life; living and loving it and soaking it in," Gena says.

...everyone surely must recognise this song, also from Blondie's 1978 Parallel Lines album.

The crowd are in full voice singing the Heart of Glass chorus back at Debbie Harry in the Glastonbury sun.

"La, da, da, la, la, la, la, la, la, la, la."

  16. Blondie look like they're loving itpublished at 17:58 British Summer Time 25 June 2023

Blondie's Debbie Harry dedicated their power ballad Maria to "all you girls who wanna be girls" and, with a nod to the trans community, "all you boys who wanna be a girl... anyone who wants to be a girl".

She seems to be loving it out there, now in a silver sparkly hooded top, and the crowd are loving her and her band back.

The "Woo-ooh wo-oh" refrain of Heart of Glass is now ringing out around the farm, amidst a sea of hands waving rhythmically. The track outro segued into instrumentals of Donna Summer's I Feel Love and The Sex Pistols' God Save the Queen (a nod to their new bass player perhaps?) - to the joy of the crowd.

This is about as much fun as you can have with your clothes on on a Sunday afternoon.

Former Playboy bunny Harry founded Blondie in New York, in 1974, alongside guitarist Chris Stein, and together they went on to become one of the best-loved acts of the post-punk era.

Natalie Mering, aka Weyes Blood, delivered a set of meditative chamber pop to an appreciative crowd.

“I’d like you to join me in a secular service,” she said before launching into an organ-led God Turned Me Into a Flower, with visuals provided by filmmaker Adam Curtis.

Dressed in an elegant ivory dress with a floaty cape that caught the breeze just like her insidious melodies - she tossed flowers over her shoulder, to be caught by her bride-to-be fans.

A highlight was Everyday, a bouncy Beatles and Beach Boys-invoking number that drew sunshine smiles on the faces of all those around me.
