    • Pharmacies and dentists: The strikes do not include any of these healthcare professionals. Services should run as normal

    Victoria Derbyshire

    Lucy Booth

Lucy Booth, who had a procedure cancelled due to the last strike, said:

    Quote Message

I fully support the doctors' strike. I think there has been an element of scaremongering today from the government, to say that patients are going to suffer. I think actually patients will suffer in the long term if Jeremy Hunt doesn't back down on this."

"This has never happened in the history of the NHS - it's the wrong thing to do," he says.

Mr Cameron adds "there was a good contract on the table", with a 13.5% increase in basic pay, with 75% of doctors having their pay increased.

He said no one working legal hours would be worse off.

  11. 'Mental health already neglected'published at 11:38 British Summer Time 26 April 2016

    Press Association

About 20 medics at the Maudsley Hospital psychiatric unit, across the road from King's College Hospital, are on strike.

Psychiatric registrar Dr Jacob Bird told the Press Association the new contracts would include "severe" cuts to payments to doctors called out to non-residential mental health cases.

    He told the Press Association:

    Quote Message

Mental health is somewhat neglected already. My concern is that with the imposition, the forcing-through of this contract, less doctors will go into psychiatry because of the impact it will have, particularly on non-residential on-call [doctors]."

  13. Expectant mother 'terrified' she will go into labour during strikepublished at 11:29 British Summer Time 26 April 2016

Strikes affect me as I'm about to go into labour any day now and terrified it'll happen whilst this is going on. Not only am I classed as an 'increased risk' birth, which requires close observations and potential fast action, but also after two miscarriages prior to this pregnancy, and getting to this stage, the fear of if anything is wrong with the baby when it's born there will be less focus on recognising any problems terrifies me. We're told there will be consultants around - however, when you feel like when you get there you have no idea whether the usual level of care and quick response will be there, it's an extremely anxious couple of days for us at a time where we should be excited. I do sympathise with the junior doctors and understand they are striving for long-term improvements, but when you have an immediate medical concern you don't care about the future, just the here and now and the people you place your trust in in life or death situations.

    Victoria Derbyshire

Sarah striking at St Thomas' Hospital London

The Victoria Derbyshire programme has been speaking to junior doctors throughout the morning who have been striking at St Thomas' Hospital in London.

One of them, Sarah, told the programme she was "emotional" about the strike and was "disappointed" and "frustrated" with the government.

She said she was "hopeful" the public would see junior doctors were striking because they were concerned about patient safety.

She added this was only thing that would make junior doctors strike.

  19. Hunt wants to be health secretary 'for several years'published at 10:42 British Summer Time 26 April 2016

Earlier we told you that Health Secretary Jeremy Hunt said he expected this to be his "last big job in politics".

Friends of his now say he wants time to complete the planned reforms to the NHS - this will include not only resolving the dispute with junior doctors but also increasing out of hours access to GPs surgeries and negotiating a new contract for hospital consultants.

He wants to be in the role for "several years", a source said.

  20. Government 'not for backing down'published at 10:37 British Summer Time 26 April 2016

    Victoria Derbyshire

    Victoria Derbyshire and Norman Smith

The BBC's assistant political editor Norman Smith said there had been a "pretty uncompromising reaction" from Jeremy Hunt and Downing Street over the contract dispute.

Norman said the government appeared to have "drawn a line in the sand" and were "not for backing down giving ground. They are determined to see this through come what may".

He said the government's game plan was to hope that pubic support for junior doctors would "fray" and that the British Medical Association's national leadership would "put the squeeze" on the junior doctors committee of the BMA, which the government believe is "much more hardline than the national leadership".
