I don't think this is a dispute about pay and conditions. I think it's a dispute about the future of the NHS and trying to preserve patient safety for the long term.

  16. Heidi Alexander: Hunt's handling of dispute has been 'shambolic'published at 09:52 British Summer Time 26 April 2016

    Heidi Alexander

Shadow Health Secretary Heidi Alexander has said today is "one of the saddest days in the history of the NHS" as junior doctors take strike action over changes to their contract.

The Labour frontbencher said Health Secretary Jeremy Hunt's handling of the dispute had been "utterly shambolic".

Ms Alexander said there was "absolutely no evidence" that changing the junior doctors' contract would "ensure completely consistent, high-quality care across seven days".

She said Jeremy Hunt had chosen to "reject" Labour's suggestion to compromise by piloting the junior doctors' contract and carry out an independent evaluation of its impact.

    Quote Message

When he was offered a way out and when he was given the opportunity to put patients first, he chose strikes.

    Heidi Alexander

Ms Alexander said the government had "had their head in the sand" and called on Jeremy Hunt to "listen" to junior doctors and hospital bosses and "be prepared to compromise".

  19. 'Proper negotiation needed', says junior doctorpublished at 09:40 British Summer Time 26 April 2016

    Victoria Derbyshire

    Kitty Mohan

Dr Kitty Mohan, a member of the BMA's Junior Doctor Committee, tells the Victoria Derbyshire programme it had taken three years to get to this point - and that there was "no other option".

    Quote Message

We feel that we have to take this action in order to try and get him [Jeremy Hunt] to listen because frankly, at the moment nothing else has worked and we really need the threat of contract imposition to be removed in order for us to be able to have a proper negotiation over this contract.
