  4. Vertical video in Venicepublished at 07:29 Greenwich Mean Time 17 November 2015

    BBC journalist

    A bicyclist in Venice

I've been on the road much of this year with BBC Pop Up. In fact, I've traveled nearly 65% of 2015.

But I moved my base from New York City to Venice, California in early September and have been eager to explore my new surroundings ever since.

Venice served as a hippy hub of the 1960s. And in some ways not much has changed. Tattoo parlours, tie-dye t-shirt stands and clinics selling marijuana are very much a part of this community.

But unlike most beach towns, Venice's boardwalk also serves as its centre of culture, music and art. On any given day one can find a professional painter working within throwing distance of a skateboard crew grinding rails. This is Dogtown after all.

While witnessing one of my first sunsets as a Californian, I ran into a group of tough-looking Venetians riding glowing bicycles.

I couldn't pass up the opportunity to experiment with a few tricks I've been waiting to try out while off the road – all on behalf of BBC Pop Up.

This is my first vertical video. I shot this story with the intention of it performing best on mobile phones. (I'll make a 16:9 version for television and the BBC website as well.)

I shot and edited this piece in just 24 hours with the help of my fiance, a skateboard and a small electronic gimbal.

Right now, it's viewable on Facebook, external and Twitter, external.

A Quebec hospital has been told to remove it’s English language signs.

    From the BBC website

"The health centre in Gaspe, on Quebec province's eastern coast, posted signs around the building in both English and French directing people to different departments. But the Office quebecois de la langue francaise - Quebec's French language office - says that using both languages violates the region's law on bilingualism, with the exception of notices relating to health and safety, the CBC news website reports, external."

BBC Pop Up covered the language debate last month in its story looking at whether immigrants struggle in the French-speaking province.

Question: How do you teach sex ed in the Arctic?

Answer: With snowmobiles and feather boas.

One of the more unique suggestions we received from viewers while in Canada was to cover the story of a non-profit group attempting to rethink sex education for teenagers in public schools in the sub-Arctic.

We met up with the group Foxy (Fostering Open Expression Among Youth) in the Northwest Territories capital of Yellowknife, which at 19,000 residents is the most populous town in all of northern Canada.

Foxy won the $1m (£494,000) Arctic Inspiration Prize for their bold approach to traditionally taboo topics in sexual health.
