  2. Environment secretary: The floods are a 'devastating situation'published at 14:20

    Environment Secretary Elizabeth Truss has told BBC News there has been "significant impact" as a result of the floods.

    "My immediate priority is making sure we have all the resources we need locally to protect people and their homes," she said.

    "Of course in due course we will be assessing our flood defences. 

    "I have huge sympathy for those affected, it is a devastating situation."

    Here are some stats from the Association of British Insurers on the cost of the 2009 Cumbria floods.

    The floods in that year led to 25,000 damage claims from customers.

    A total of £174 million was paid out in repairing damaged homes and businesses and arranging alternative accommodation for people.

    A further £104 million was paid out in claims to flood-hit local firms.

    The A985 reopened at Valleyfield, Fife, shortly before midday following a five-hour closure. 

    Dumfries and Galloway Council reported "a relatively quiet night" after declaring a "major emergency" due to flooding yesterday. 

    Only two support calls were received by the council's call centre after midnight as water levels started to recede.

    The Scottish Environment Agency has now confirmed there are 60 warnings or alerts in place. They break down as follows:

    - 11 flood alerts

    - 48 flood warnings

    - 1 severe flood warning in place at Hawick

    At one point on Saturday night there were more than 90 alerts or warnings in place.

  17. Met Office issues Storm Desmond statisticspublished at 12:43

    The Met Office has issued, external some facts and figures surrounding Storm Desmond, the fourth UK storm to be given a name this year. 

    It says the rainfall total between 09:00 GMT on 4 December and the same time on 6 December was worst in Shap in Cumbria, where 262.6mm fell. 

    The maximum wind gust speeds recorded between 18:00 GMT on 5 December and 09:00 GMT on 6 December was 81mph in Capel Curig, Gwynedd.
