  2. Do names make us think storms are worse?published at 09:28

Man in strong windImage source, Reuters

It started with Abigail, continuing via Barney, Clodagh, Desmond, Eva, Frank, Gertrude, Henry, Imogen, and Jake. Now Storm Katie is the latest in the line of storms and weather events that have happened across the UK since November.

The Met Office began naming storms as a way to keep the public better informed and more prepared for bad weather.

It's left some people wondering whether this winter has been worse than average, given the number of named storms there have been. Or is the new convention of naming them simply grabbing more attention?

  6. Forecast for the day aheadpublished at 08:59

We are informed by BBC Weather presenter Carol Kirkwood that Storm Katie is continuing to track across southern and southeastern England, but we will start to see an improvement as the day goes on.

Coupled with heavy rain, there is some hill snow on the higher routes across Wales, Shropshire, the Midlands, the Peak District and the Pennines this morning and it is causing some nasty travelling conditions.

This will all clear the east coast of England by early afternoon, by which time the wind will be easing and we will see a return to sunshine and showers (quite a lot of showers in south west England later).

    Temperatures: 8-13C

In Scotland and Northern Ireland it’s a chilly start with some pockets of frost and the risk of ice on untreated surfaces. But for you it is a much better day than yesterday with sunshine and showers - more emphasis on the sunshine than the showers - and light winds.

    Temperatures: 7-9C
