"She asks us to trust her on security but the truth is, as home secretary she cut armed officers and cut community police numbers."

The prime minister said the threat level would remain at 'severe', which means a terror attack is highly likely, and the police have put extra security measures in place at a number of London bridges.

"Police are working hard to establish the identity of those who were tragically killed," Mrs May said, adding that there were a number of nationalities among the victims.

The PM praised the "extraordinary" heroism of police officers, adding that hospital staff and emergency services "have undoubtedly saved lives".

A Madrid man is missing in London after he used his skateboard against one of the jihadists, who was stabbing a woman, Spanish media report.

Ignacio Echeverría, 39, saw the attack unfolding at London Bridge on Saturday night, and rushed to help the woman.

Friends with him at the time told his family what had happened.

Reports say Mr Echeverría is not listed among the dead. His sister has gone to London hospitals, but there is no news of him being among the injured.

In a message on Facebook his father Joaquín Echeverría urged members of the public to help find his son, posting details of Ignacio.

Apparently Mr Echeverría did not have ID on him at the time. The Spanish embassy and HSBC Bank, his employer in London, are helping to search for him.

"It's where I work, where I live, where I go out. If we stop doing those things, the people who are doing this win.

"We have to be vigilant but we can't fear. We just need to step up and carry on."

    Elizabeth Anderson

Elizabeth Anderson agrees that Londoners have to carry on as before.

"It's our city, we can't stop," she said. "We have to go on the way we do.

"On the other hand we do have to be aware that this is happening so we have to stay vigilant.

"But on the whole you can't give in."

    BBC Radio 4

On Saturday night the Metropolitan Police issued a warning on social media: Run, Hide, Tell.

That means run away from any threat, hide if you can't get away and then, when you are safe, tell by calling the police.

Andrew Thurgood from the charity Citizen Aid says he wants to add an extra word, so it is "run, hide, tell, treat".

The first people available to treat the injured in such situations are members of the public, he tells Today.

Citizen Aid want to raise awareness, for example, that people can use scarves and other clothing as tourniquets to stop bleeding.

"It's totally acceptable to improvise of these sorts of occasions," he says.

"Terrorism has a number of different impacts – not only in the very visceral sense of human fatality and casualty, but it does have an impact on business."

He added an immediate impact is that employees of businesses that are in the cordon cannot get to work while that is in place.

"Many companies have been looking at crisis management and continuity plans to incorporate business interruption issues and especially terrorism."

  19. Theresa May to set out 'the next steps'published at 09:37 British Summer Time 5 June 2017

    BBC News Channel

    Norman Smith

Prime Minister Theresa May is being briefed on the latest developments, says BBC assistant political editor Norman Smith, including "trying to get some sort of understanding of who these people were" and whether they had support from others.

The PM is due to make a speech after the security briefing in which we could get "a much clearer sense of what she regards as the next steps", Norman adds.

This is likely to include "beefing up" the deradicalisation strategy Prevent and reviewing Terrorism Prevention and Investigation Measures, or TPims, which replaced control orders and are a form of house arrest.

There is a "widespread view at Westminster that TPims are simply not tough enough", Norman says.

However, the "most contentious area" will be Mrs May's aim of confronting the ideology behind such attacks and preventing "safe spaces" in any community for extremists.
