  2. Great concern that attacker was known to authorities, says expertpublished at 21:04 British Summer Time 5 June 2017

Professor Michael Clarke, former director general of the security think tank Rusi, says it is a "great concern" that the authorities knew about Khuram Butt, one of Saturday's attackers, and Salman Abedi, who carried out the Manchester suicide attack, but failed to stop them.

    Quote Message

There were some red lights flashing, certainly in the case of Butt, not the other gentleman who was named so far, but certainly with Abedi in Manchester and Butt now. It looks as if there were some indications that, on the face of it, may have been missed. And I think that will be a great concern.

  5. Hackney man believed to be among the deadpublished at 20:48 British Summer Time 5 June 2017

    James McMullanImage source, PA

James McMullan, 32, from Hackney, east London, is believed to be among those who died after his bank card was found on a body at the scene.

Mr McMullan had been with his friend, Andy Byers.

    Quote Message

He actually phoned me just before it happened. He couldn't get back inside the pub. Being James he said he had just popped down to the bar downstairs and said 'i'll just wait for you guys and get a drink there'. Literally within about five minutes we were just about to walk out, we'd finished our drinks and we all got rushed back inside. And then I was ringing him straight away and I couldn't get through to him. It was just ringing and ringing.

  6. Trump 'not picking a fight' with London mayorpublished at 20:38 British Summer Time 5 June 2017

Combination of pictures shows London Mayor Sadiq Khan and US President Donald TrumpImage source, AFP

A White House spokeswoman has said US President Donald Trump is not "picking a fight" with the London mayor after Mr Trump posted two tweets criticising Sadiq Khan in the aftermath of Saturday's attacks.

    Quote Message

I don't see that the president is picking a fight with the mayor of London at all. I think again the president's point is something he said frankly back, it's been almost two years now, a year and a half ago, when the president talked about how we have to be more committed to national security. One of the reasons we have the travel ban here through that executive order is a focus on national security, that was the point he was trying to make.

Sarah Huckabee Sanders, White House spokeswoman

Mr Trump accused Mr Khan of offering a "pathetic excuse" for saying there was no reason for people to be alarmed.

Mr Khan's spokesman earlier pointed out that the mayor was in fact telling Londoners not to be worried about seeing more armed officers on the streets, and had more important things to do than respond to what he called Mr Trump's "ill-informed tweets".

But the US president hit back, also accusing mainstream media of working hard to "sell" the mayor's comments.

  7. 'I was verbally assaulted by Khuram Butt in 2013'published at 20:29 British Summer Time 5 June 2017

The head of Ramadhan Foundation, a Manchester-based group which works to build better relationships between communities, said he was "verbally assaulted" by attacker Khuram Butt in 2013.

Mohammed Shafiq said in a statement that the incident happened on College Green, outside the Palace of Westminster, on the day after the brutal murder of soldier Lee Rigby.

He said Butt was with jailed preacher Anjem Choudary.

    Quote Message

Khuram Butt called me a "murtad" which means traitor in Arabic and accused me of being a government stooge when I confronted Anjem Choudhury about him supporting terrorism and my public campaign against Lee Rigby's murder.

    Quote Message

The police turned up and Anjum, Khuram Butt and two other men were escorted away towards Millbank and I stayed in College Green.

    Quote Message

It is clear that Anjem Choudhury and his band of terrorist sympathisers were known to the Police for many years. Many of us in the British Muslim community have been demanding action against these extremists to no avail. I am not surprised that Khuram Butt carried out the terrorist attack and there are serious questions for the authorities.

    Quote Message

My message to the people of London is that we stand in solidarity with all Londoners. We've been through attacks, we know what it feels like. And Mayor Khan is doing exactly the right thing. He is telling people that they can be assured that security forces will be reinforced, will be present, will be visible. That's exactly what a leader is supposed to do.
