    Mr Hussain says he thinks "in many ways this [attack] was inevitable".

    "We expected it, because we've seen numerous types of Islamophobic attacks.

    "They're not just small attacks, we're talking about from verbal abuse to real attacks on individuals and attacks on mosques, which have been taken as retaliation in a sense from after other attacks that we've seen, whether that's been in Manchester or London."

    He says this is one of the reasons frustrations were high.

    Muhbeen Hussain, founder of British Muslism Youth, told the BBC he had met with eyewitnesses of the attack.

    He said there were "real frustrations" and "emotions were really, really high".

    But he said there was also solidarity.

    "People are very thankful the police are there and doing their duty as well."

    Police say there are no reports of anyone having suffered any knife injuries.

    Some people at the scene had said the driver had a knife. This has not been confirmed.

    The investigation is being carried out by the Counter Terrorism Command, the Met Police said.

    A spokesman added: "The driver of the van - a man aged 48 - was found detained by members of public at the scene and then arrested by police in connection with the incident.

    "He has been taken to hospital as a precaution, and will be taken into custody once discharged. He will also be subject of a mental health assessment in due course.

    "At this early stage of this investigation, no other suspects at the scene have been identified or reported to police, however the investigation continues.

    "Due to the nature of this incident extra policing resources have been deployed in order to reassure communities, especially those observing Ramadan."

    Metropolitan Police have confirmed , externalone man was pronounced dead at the scene.

    "Officers are in the process of informing next of kin," they said.

    "Eight people injured were taken to three separate hospitals; two people were treated at the scene for minor injuries."

    There are two mosques within a few metres of each in Finsbury Park: The Muslim Welfare House, on Seven Sisters Road, and Finsbury Park Mosque, on St Thomas's Rd.

    Miqdaad Versi, the deputy head of The Muslim Council of Britain, external, said the incident happened outside the Muslim Welfare House, according to AFP news agency.

    The MCB has called it a "violent manifestation of Islamophobia".
