    RTE News is reporting the first death in Ireland caused by the storm. The Irish national broadcaster says that a woman died in County Waterford after a tree fell on a car.

    Reporter Damien Tiernan is reporting from west Waterford, and broke the news on RTE Radio 1.

    The Scottish Environment Protection Agency has put a series of alerts in place for south west Scotland.

    Flood duty manager David Faichney said: "A combination of tidal surge and large waves will cause overtopping along exposed coastal areas, particularly the Mull of Galloway.

    "Impacts are expected to coincide with high tide around 10pm this evening until the early hours of Tuesday."

  8. Garden furniture 'will turn into kites'published at 12:12 British Summer Time 16 October 2017

    Videos on social media are showing garden furniture being swept up by the wind on the west coast of Ireland.

    Adrian McCarthy posted this video from Cobh, Co Cork, of a trampoline flying across several gardens.

    Earlier Gary McMahon, of Galway City Council, said residents should remove garden furniture and put it indoors, as it would "turn into kites" during Ophelia.

    Seven schools in Pembrokeshire, Wales, have said they are sending their pupils home early and closing before lunch time as a "precautionary measure".

    In north west Wales, Bangor University has cancelled all teaching, meetings and non-essential activities from 14:00 BST.

    Fourteen flood warnings and alerts are in place for possible coastal flooding on south coast and north west coast of England.

    Flood warnings mean flooding is expected and "imminent action is required", while flood alerts mean flooding is possible.

    About 22,000 have been left without power as a result of the storm brought by Ophelia in Ireland.

    The country's Electricity Supply Board warned that widespread power outages were expected as a result of the adverse weather conditions.

  18. Ophelia 'forces Clinton to postpone Ireland trip'published at 11:20 British Summer Time 16 October 2017

    Storm Ophelia has forced former US president Bill Clinton to postpone a planned intervention in Northern Ireland's political stalemate.

    The Press Association reports that Mr Clinton had been due in the country on Monday to meet the region's political parties, as they continue to struggle to reach a deal to restore the collapsed Executive.

    But the visit was called off at late notice due to the severe weather warnings.

    PA said it was understood the visit may still take place on Tuesday.
