BBC Political Editor Laura Kuenssberg says “swathes of the country might cheer” if Theresa May was rude to Donald Trump.

However “that is absolutely not her style”, she says, adding that the prime minister still wants a US trade deal.

She also says Donald Trump, by questioning the Brexit plan, has “put his finger” on something many Conservatives believe.

“It’s a big call for her on how she handles this,” she says.

The BBC’s North American editor, Jon Sopel said after the Chequers agreement was reached last week, the government would have been reaching out to the US administration to explain it.

But he told the Today programme: "It doesn’t really matter whether you have convinced the treasury secretary, it doesn’t really matter if you have convinced Donald Trump’s chief of staff, it doesn’t really matter who you have convinced in the administration if this is the right way forward.

"In everything - not just to do with Theresa May, but with Donald Trump’s relationships everywhere around the world - it is whether Donald Trump buys it or not.

"And Donald Trump clearly does not buy the Chequers agreement and has come out fighting."

He added: "You can put lipstick on a pig, but it is still a pig.

"What Donald Trump has done with that interview is he has handed the government an enormous, big, smelly pig on the day he is due to be holding a news conference at Chequers.

"Those talks, that news conference, are going to be a collectors item."

Sir Alan does not think the president's comments were "rude" to Mrs May and her government.

He told Radio 4's Today: "Donald Trump is in many ways a controversialist - that’s his style, that’s the colour he brings to the world stage and he is in that sense very unconventional.

"I don’t think we see it as rude and I think the atmosphere last night at the Blenheim dinner was very, very special actually.

"He is entitled to his opinion."
