  7. 5 live listeners: Can we trust Trump on trade?published at 10:10 British Summer Time 13 July 2018

    BBC Radio 5 live

Melissa in Birmingham and Lisa in Rugby were on 5 live's Your Call programme this morning.

Melissa said just because Trump's got a "big loud voice", it doesn't mean we have to listen to him.

    Quote Message

He's not a politician, he’s a businessman. He's not even making his own people happy. [He] is upsetting his own trade position and his own manufacturers are starting to scream with pain."

But Lisa disagreed, saying we shouldn't "fall into the trap of thinking this man is a buffoon".

    Quote Message

He is rebooting the American nation. Do not believe the leftist spin on this man. He is making in-roads in America. Americans have money in their pocket and he is securing their borders for the first time in 20 years."

  9. Tory MP: 'Why shouldn't we roll out the red carpet?'published at 10:05 British Summer Time 13 July 2018

    Victoria Derbyshire

    Nigel Evans

Conservative MP Nigel Evans has said he welcomes President Trump's visit to the UK.

Speaking on the Victoria Derbyshire programme, he said: "Quite frankly, when the president went to France a few weeks ago, they rolled out the red carpet - why shouldn’t we do exactly the same?

"We have got huge and close ties with the United States of America over a long period of time.

"We have got a $50bn trade surplus with the United States of America [whilst] we have got an £80bn deficit with the European Union.

"If I’ve got a problem with any world leaders, it’s the EU27 who want to give us a very bad trade deal, not the United States of America."

    Steve BannonImage source, Reuters

Steve Bannon, President Trump’s former chief strategist, told ITV’s Good Morning Britain that the EU had already slammed the White Paper from Chequers.

Mr Bannon, who was also heavily involved in President Trump’s campaign, said: “My fear about your white paper is… the guys in Brussels said last night there's no chance that we accept this.

“You kind of tried to meet them three quarters of the way and they have no interest in trying to meet this.

He added: “I think once again you see the corporate influence of the City of London that have wanted to slow walk this thing from day one.

“They do not want Brexit, they particularly don’t want a hard Brexit.

“It is just like in the United States where you have this movement to make sure that Trump’s presidency doesn’t go well.”

  15. Why US food rules will divide MPs over trade dealpublished at 09:40 British Summer Time 13 July 2018

    Roger Harrabin
    BBC environment analyst

Whatever the president thinks, the details of any post-Brexit trade deal with America will divide Britain’s politicians.

All will agree that a US deal is a good idea in principle.

But the Trump administration is insisting that any future agreement would include the import into the UK of hormone-fed beef and chlorine-washed chicken.

This is not compatible with EU standards - and most British consumers don’t seem to want these products either.

In fact, the whole US bigger-and-cheaper-is-better farming industry is at odds with the vision of the Environment Secretary Michael Gove of high-quality farm products in a rich countryside.

Some will say that when it comes to trade in agriculture with the US, no deal is better than a bad deal.

  20. 'Trump is not willing for May to survive as PM'published at 09:26 British Summer Time 13 July 2018

The BBC's North America doubts President Trump's belief in Theresa May

    Jon Sopel
    BBC North America Editor

Jon Sopel does not think Donald Trump believes Theresa May will be in her job for long.

The BBC's North American editor told Radio 4's Today: "I don’t think he is either willing her survival or believing in her survival.

"There are other things he could have said about Britain and Theresa May, and made it easy.

"The conventional approach for any president when faced with division in the ruling party is to say... 'We will work with whoever is the prime minister and we support Theresa May in her endeavours'.

"Now Donald Trump has not said that at all - he has gone his own way.

"It is like he has put his thumb on the scales - in fact, he has put his whole body on the scales - not behind Theresa May but behind the dissident voices, the people who resigned from Cabinet, the Conservatives who believe this is a terrible deal.

"He said, 'you are not going to get a trade deal with us if you go down this soft Brexit path'. That contains a very direct threat."
