As a result, staff had to set up extra beds throughout the restaurant, used bedding from their storeroom and lit fire places.

He had been travelling back to Devon from St Austell in Cornwall on Thursday afternoon when the snow started coming down heavily in Bodmin.

He said: "It just absolutely dumped, within about half an hour we were completely stuck, traffic queues for miles. Very pretty, but not very convenient.

"I was there from about three o'clock until about 11.30 at night, then a snow plough came through which we followed.

"Bit of an epic journey. Got back about 2.30 this morning."

He added: "I must have had a premonition yesterday because before I left home I put a sleeping bag, a shovel, a load of food and some water in my car."

"I didn't really think I'd need it but it was brilliant, I was wrapped up in my sleeping bag on Bodmin Moor in a big traffic queue."

If you're thinking of driving today, RAC urges you take "extreme care".

Kevin Andrews, from the company, says "drive with caution, take everything nice and gentle on the throttle, the brakes, the steering".

"The road is very, very treacherous indeed," he adds.

"My advice personally would be to stay at home, it's just not worth it."

He adds: "But if you have to go out, take two extra coats - one to wear and one to sit on if need be."

And take a good quality screen wash - "water just freezes, no good at all" - and make sure there's no snow on the car, especially on the windscreen or the wiper area.

"If you get stuck, there's not a lot anyone can do but be prepared," he said.

"Make sure your phone is charged up, extra warm clothes, put extra food in the car. Just think - what would you need?"

  20. How to clear snowpublished at 09:22 Greenwich Mean Time 1 February 2019

Are you needing to clear a pathway of snow this morning to get out and about?

The Home Office, external gives this handy advice:

    • do it early in the day - it’s easier to move fresh, loose snow
    • don’t use water - it might refreeze and turn to black ice
    • use salt if possible - it will melt the ice or snow and stop it from refreezing overnight (but don’t use the salt from salting bins as this is used to keep roads clear)
    • you can use ash and sand if you don’t have enough salt - it will provide grip underfoot
    • pay extra attention when clearing steps and steep pathways - using more salt may help

Others have found their own methods:
