But Green Party MP Caroline Lucas would not let the Foreign Office gathering rain on her parade.

Addressing the crowd at the protest, Ms Lucas said of Mr Trump: "This is a man who is not worthy of our respect, he is not worthy of the office of president and we say go home."

"We stand in solidarity with all of those that recognise that our future is green or it is not at all," she added.

She said Mr Trump was "best friends with Nigel Farage and Boris Johnson", prompting boos from the crowd.

Ms Lucas also said the president was "no friend of Britain", adding: "We know that Britain is better than the Britain that has been pimping out the royal family for photo opportunities for Trump."

  18. Trump 'incredibly critical' of Corbynpublished at 15:00 British Summer Time 4 June 2019

    BBC News Channel

BBC political editor Vicki Young says Mr Trump and Labour leader Jeremy Corbyn's relationship could be "very difficult" to rebuild after the US president's performance.

She tells the BBC News Channel that the US president was "incredibly critical" of the leader of the opposition given the "uncertainty" in British politics.

Asked whether this was a "reined-in news conference" for Mr Trump, she responds: "Imagine a press conference in a few months time with the two of them?"

She adds: "But then it did end with laughs where he (Mr Trump) then turns to (Tory leadership contender) Jeremy Hunt sitting in the front row and asks him about (fellow contender) Michael Gove, asking: 'Jeremy, would Michael Gove do a good job as leader?'

"That's also quite perplexing because Michael Gove has met Donald Trump - he interviewed him a couple of years ago on behalf of the Times - maybe someone will remind him of that."

  19. What's next on the president's agenda?published at 14:58 British Summer Time 4 June 2019

The motorcade carrying the president away from Downing Street marks the end of official business talk - for today at least.

Next, Mr and Mrs Trump will take part in a tour of the Churchill War Rooms, just around the corner from the Foreign Office where they held their news conference a few minutes ago.

They will then head to Buckingham Palace in order to fly by helicopter out of the palace grounds and back to their base at Winfield House in Regent's Park.

They will then have a few hours of time to rest up - and perhaps send a few Tweets - before hosting a dinner at the US Amabassador's residence.

Guests include the Prince of Wales and the Duchess of Cornwall, who will attend on behalf of the Queen.
