    Storm Ciara is making life difficult for people across the UK, and parts of mainland Europe too.

    France, Belgium and the Netherlands are experiencing rain and high winds. The island of Ireland was the first to be blasted.

    Air travel has been disrupted in Belgium and Germany, with 100 flights to and from Frankfurt - Germany's largest airport - grounded.

    The Humber Bridge has been closed because of the extreme weather.

    It often suspends high-sided vehicles from crossing during high winds but since opening in 1981, this is the first time it has been closed completely because of bad weather, according to the Yorkshire Post., external

    It says the bridge has only ever been completely closed once before - in 2016 after a crash.

    The Environment Agency has issued a severe flood warning for the River Nidd at Pateley Bridge in North Yorkshire. The river is forecast to peak at 5.1 metres this afternoon.

    "This will lead to significant overtopping and may pose a danger to life," the agency warns.

  11. New Met Office warning for snow and icepublished at 12:49 Greenwich Mean Time 9 February 2020

    The Met Office have issued a new yellow weather warning for parts of northern England on Monday.

    It says heavy snow and icy surfaces are likely to lead to more travel disruption on Monday, from 15:00 GMT until 23:59 GMT on Tuesday.

    Yellow weather warnings now cover the whole of the UK until midnight on Sunday.

    An amber warning for , externalwinds is still in place across much of England and Wales until 21:00 GMT on Sunday.

    The Met Office warns that wind-blown debris and large waves could pose a danger to life.

    An amber warning for rain is in place in parts of Scotland, meaning homes and businesses are likely to be flooded and some communities could be cut off by impassable roads.

    The heavy winds and rain failed to dampen the spirits of these hardy football fans in Sheffield. While many other sports events in the UK and abroad have been cancelled, the Premier League match between Sheffield United and AFC Bournemouth is still due to go ahead at Bramall Lane.

    There are severe delays on the Metropolitan Line between Harrow-on-the-Hill and Uxbridge, due to a fallen tree on the track in the Eastcote area.

    Problems with trees have also affected services between Moor Park and the Amersham/Chesham area.

    The Central Line has severe delays in the East Acton area .

    Tickets are being accepted on local London buses.

    Scottish and Southern Electricity Networks said about 900 properties were without power after Storm Ciara hit supplies in Mull and Lochearnhead in Perthshire.

    The company said it had restored power to about 2,000 properties throughout Sunday morning after winds damaged overhead power lines.

    SP Energy Networks said supplies were also affected by the storm in the south-west, with outages in Lockerbie, Newton Stewart and Kirkcudbright.
