Jane met the Queen in 1981
Jane Smales, a retired nurse who served in Iraq and Afghanistan, met the Queen when she was in the police force in 1981 at the opening of the Humber Bridge.
Her job was to collect the flowers from the Queen and put them in Royal car.
“When I got over to the South Bank, I put the flowers in the back of the car and as I turned around, the Queen and Prince Phillip were waiting for me to get out of the car before they could get in,” she said.
“The Queen thanked me, saying 'you are very kind for putting the flowers into the car.'"
“It’s something I will never forget, and I was very honoured to be able to do it.”
Jane was part of a group of 16 veterans from the charity Hull 4 Heroes who came down to London to pay their respects to the Queen.
