He recalls the words she spoke after the passing of her husband, Prince Philip: "Life, of course, consists of final partings as well as first meetings."

Addressing the Queen directly, he writes:

    Quote Message

Granny, while this final parting brings us great sadness, I am forever grateful for all of our first meetings - from my earliest childhood memories with you, to meeting you for the first time as my Commander-in-Chief, to the first moment you met my darling wife and hugged your beloved great-grandchildren.

"I cherish these times shared with you, and the many other special moments in between. You are already sorely missed, not just by us, but by the world over. And as it comes to first meetings, we now honour my father in his new role as King Charles III.

"Thank you for your commitment to service. Thank you for your sound advice. Thank you for your infectious smile.

"We, too, smile knowing that you and grandpa are reunited now, and both together in peace."

  19. 'Tomorrow will be Queen's last day on Scottish soil' - deputy first ministerpublished at 09:20 British Summer Time 12 September 2022

Both the Queen and the new King have long held a "deep and warm relationship" with Scots, Deputy First Minister for Scotland John Swinney tells the BBC.

He says watching the cortege yesterday was a “moment of enormous significance” and “people drew breath”.

Swinney adds that tomorrow will be the final chance for the people of Scotland to “pay dignified tribute” to Her Majesty, before the Queen's coffin is flown to London.

She will then begin her “significant and solemn journey”, he says, which will be the last time Her Majesty “will be on Scottish soil”.

On the question of independence, he reiterates his party’s argument that the monarch, now King Charles, should continue to reign as head of state over an independent Scotland.

    Rainbow in Balmoral

All is peaceful and still at Balmoral Castle this morning with a rainbow framing the King's estate.

A heron, stock-still, is fishing in the River Dee. Weary police officers are waiting to be relieved after standing guard all night over the forest of flowers, now damp after Sunday's rain. There are now many thousands of tributes here.

I am the only reporter left. The cameras, the tents and the tripods have all moved on to Edinburgh as the focus of the nation shifts to Charles III and his reign.

But the tributes outside these imposing gates remain. Typical of the many was one which read: "Recognised, revered, remembered around the globe."
