Yes, that's our advice: wrap-up. As the BBC's Simon King said earlier, "ice is going to be a huge problem" into tomorrow, as we see wide-spread frost overnight.

We've seen the M62 at a standstill this morning, school closures today and the beautiful images from the Angel of the North.

The weather has certainly hit people differently across the country today.

For more updates on the snow and what's to be expected over the weekend, keep across it with BBC Weather.

    • 27cm was the deepest snow recorded at Capel Curig in North Wales
    • 14cm of snow was also officially recorded at Bingley in West Yorkshire

Although a Met Office spokesman said they have heard of observations higher than this in Leeds and Sheffield.

How does this compare to the record books?

Despite clearer skies, Andrew Page-Dove, of National Highways, has warned weather conditions will deteriorate on Friday night.

"We've got some very cold weather overnight. We've got the risk of potentially freezing rain and then more snow tomorrow," he says, adding conditions "are actually going to get worse rather than better".

But he reassured local people that the National Highways workforce "will be continuously out there treating the roads".

"Our intention is to keep the M62 open," Page-Dove adds.

He said problems tended to arise during busy traffic period with drivers "maybe not being as well prepared for the conditions".

National Highways have advised that further snow is likely to affect the cross-Pennine routes: M62, A66 and A69. "We have issued an alert and would urge drivers to avoid these routes, especially larger HGVs," it stated.

Snow days are not always bad news...

Logan, aged 10, is absolutely chuffed that his school,. Menston Primary, near Ilkley, has been closed today.

He looked out of his window at 06:00 GMT this morning to see the Yorkshire Dales transformed into a winter wonderland.

An hour later he was on the local hill, with his family, on his snow scooter.

His mum, Lizzie, says people pay thousands of pounds to enjoy the snow abroad - and this is right on the doorstep. "It’s brilliant!"

  9. How's travel looking?published at 14:03 Greenwich Mean Time 10 March 2023

    Roads

"Wintry conditions are far from over," says Rod Dennis at the RAC, who warns cold weather road dangers will continue into next week.

    Quote Message

Many roads are likely to be slippery as result of low overnight temperatures affecting surfaces that remain wet from either snow or rain this week, while fresh snowfall may affect isolated, upland routes."

    Rod Dennis, RAC breakdown spokesman

    Rail

Network Rail says it hopes two Peak District rail routes blocked by snow will reopen between 3pm and 6pm.

The closure of the Hope Valley line means no trains are running between Manchester and Sheffield.

There are no services between Buxton and Hazel Grove due to the Buxton line being blocked.

Meanwhile some lines expect delays and cancellations to continue with Great Northern and Thameslink tweeting: "Not all areas of the network will be equally disrupted, but your journey may be impacted until the morning of Saturday, 11 March."

You're advised to check the National Rail website, external before setting off.

Things seem to be back to normal after some UK airports were affected by heavy snow - but as always check before you travel.

East Midlands Airport has reopened after being closed for around three hours this morning.Flights were suspended at Birmingham Airport for around an hour to clear snow from the runway. There were also delays to flights at Bristol Airport.

  10. Motorists' relief as A66 reopens under blue skiespublished at 13:50 Greenwich Mean Time 10 March 2023

    Danny Savage
    North of England correspondent

At 12:45 GMT, the A66 reopened between Penrith and Scotch Corner.

Drivers had been patiently queueing at the snow gates at Bowes for an hour or so in anticipation of the road reopening.

It will be a relief for many motorists, especially for truck drivers who use this road 24/7 and were forced to navigate less favourable alternatives after the route was shut at lunchtime yesterday.

Bright blue skies over much of northern England are giving the region a beautiful alpine look.

Much of the snow will melt this afternoon, but what’s left will freeze solid tonight making things treacherous again tomorrow.

  11. What if I can't afford to pay my energy bill?published at 13:35 Greenwich Mean Time 10 March 2023

This week's cold weather is one thing - and the lasting impact on your wallet during the energy crisis is another.

Head here for our latest advice on what to do if you're struggling to pay your bills.

    A few key tips:

    • Check your usage. Your monthly payment is based on your estimated energy use for the year, and your supplier may reduce your bill if its estimate is higher than the amount you actually use
    • You can also request a flexible monthly direct debit, in which you pay for what you actually use each month. This requires a smart meter or regular readings
    • If the direct debit is fair, but you can't meet it, ask your supplier for an "able to pay plan" based on paying what you can afford. That will mean your arrears accrue more slowly
    • Check you are claiming all the benefits you can, and the full range of government help that's been offered from October 2022 to March 2023. Definitely check the full article for more details on these - and bear in mind there's a different arrangement in Northern Ireland
    • Look at your boiler settings. Many have a hot water pre-heat option. But most homes don't need this, and turning it off saves money

BBC journalist James Gallagher found there are health risks to living in a room cooler than 18C

As the BBC's James Gallagher discovered, there are health risks to living in a room cooler than 18C.

A room that measures 10C (50F) may not sound too chilly, but such a temperature can have a profound impact on the heart, lungs and brain.

James, the presenter of the Inside Health programme on BBC Radio 4, recently undertook an experiment which saw him trying to complete tasks while the room was gradually dropped to 10C..

"What shocks me is the change in blood flow to the brain and how much longer it takes me to complete a shape-sorting game," he wrote.

And he discovered that living in a cold temperature doesn't just slow you down - it brings health risks, too.

It's for this reason that scientists recommend you keep your home heated to at least 18C, if you can.

We've just spoken to Haroon Tariq who told us he was stuck on the M62 from midnight until around 3am after going to the the Man United match at Old Trafford with his brother and friends.

They knew snow was on the way so took a 4x4 to head back to Bradford.

    Quote Message

Leaving Manchester was fine - but when we got on the M62 near Saddleworth it was mayhem... Some vehicles were horizontal on the road, some cars were rear wheel drives and not fit for the snow.

    Quote Message

So many people were stranded. It was snowing, and windy. We were lucky because people further behind us were stuck for much longer.

    Quote Message

The fast lanes were closed off for the snow ploughs and recovery vehicles but some of those couldn’t get through either because people had blocked them with their vehicles. People just wanted to get home.

    BBC News

We've been covering the safest ways to drive in this weather the last few days. This RAC guide, external offers a list of the key things to focus on.

    1. Accelerate gently, use low revs and change up to a higher gear as quickly as possible
    2. Move off in second gear as this will help reduce wheel slip
    3. Get your speed right and maintain safe stopping distances, including leaving plenty of room for uphill starts
    4. Use a low gear for going downhill and try to avoid braking unless necessary
    5. When approaching a bend, brake before you actually start to turn the steering wheel
    6. If your car does lose grip the key thing is to take your foot off the accelerator and make sure that your wheels are pointing in the direction you want to go in
    7. If you do encounter a skid, steer gently into it
    8. When driving in heavy snow, make sure that you use your dipped headlights
    9. If visibility drops below 100m (330ft), put your fog lights on
    10. Wear comfortable footwear

  20. 'We just want to go home'published at 11:29 Greenwich Mean Time 10 March 2023

    Kim Ward

Earlier, we brought you the story of Kim Ward, who was travelling home to Halifax from Manchester overnight when the car she and four others were travelling in became stranded. She's been sharing more details of the ordeal.

She says the A road on which they were travelling became impassable and they were stuck in their vehicle for two hours before rescue services picked them up and took them to a hotel in Huddersfield.

Kim says the weather was like nothing she experienced before, and the "complete blizzard" left it difficult to catch her breath.

The group have been "really looked after", she adds, and they will have to wait to retrieve their car from the road when the weather subsides.

    Quote Message

We can't actually get home right now, we don't know how long we're going to be here for."

    Kim Ward

Charlotte Leszczyszyn was also travelling in the car and says the breathlessness she experienced from the blizzard while moving to the rescue vehicle was "awful".

They are tired, she says, adding: "We just want to go home...it's ten minutes down the road and we can't even get there."
