Schools on the Isle of Man remain closed for a second day due to heavy snowfall overnight.

All schools and colleges on the island were closed on Thursday due to the deteriorating conditions.

Ronaldsway Met Office said while the snow would "soon turn slushy" in the morning's bright and sunny conditions, a widespread frost would create "hazardous conditions on the pavements and roads" later.

A government spokeswoman said "the safety of pupils and staff travelling to and from school across the island is of paramount importance".

  3. Residents tackle thick snow in West Yorkshirepublished at 10:54 Greenwich Mean Time 10 March 2023

Nick Weston in Ainley Top, West Yorkshire, is one of those people mentioned in Mairead's post below who've been busy clearing their driveways.

"It happens every year," he says. No doubt he's earned a hot cup of tea after all that effort.

As you'll see in the second pic, the snow has given locals some beautiful views of the countryside, even if the driving conditions have been very arduous.

Dog walkers have still braved the nearby pavements, and people living here have spent time clearing thick snow from their driveways.

Video journalist Richard McCarthy arrived home shortly after 07:00 having been stuck on the M62 for more than seven hours.

Like his PA Media colleague from whom we heard a little earlier, McCarthy had been in Manchester to cover last night's Manchester United match.

"The worst bits are around Huddersfield," he said. "A couple of highway patrolmen gave me a push when I was stuck, but said they couldn't promise that the road ahead would be more clear. Thankfully, it was."

All types of vehicles were getting stuck in the challenging conditions, he added.

"I saw lots of abandoned sports cars: one Jaguar left on the road with a shovel stuck in the ground next to it and no driver.

"There were lots of lorries losing momentum and getting stuck [too]."

  19. 'Next thing we knew mountain rescue were knocking on the window'published at 07:47 Greenwich Mean Time 10 March 2023

Kim Ward was on her way home to Halifax from Manchester overnight, with various members of the family, when their car got stranded.

"We are still stranded at the moment," Kim told BBC's Radio 5 Live's Rachel Burden early this morning.

Kim, who went to a concert in Manchester with her sister-in-law, a niece and a friend, said they had considered not travelling last night, but had assumed their car - a 4x4 - would cope in the conditions.

But the return journey turned out to be considerably worse than expected.

"The M62 was shut, so we thought we would take the A road," she said.

"We thought we would be alright, but as we got higher and higher, it just got worse and worse.

"We spent a couple of hours completely stuck, freezing - we actually started nodding off in the car.

    Quote Message

Next thing we knew mountain rescue were knocking on the window with their torches. They brought us here this morning."

She went on to say: "I have been on numerous ski holidays, but I have never seen anything like it, up on the top there.

"It's scary, thinking you are going to actually spend the night here in the car."
