    • A Land Rover crashed into a private girls' school in Wimbledon, south-west London, at around 10:00 BST this morning
    • A eight-year-old girl died at the scene, police have confirmed

    Detective Chief Superintendent Clair Kelland's voice broke with emotion as she announced that an eight-year-old girl had died following the crash at a school in Wimbledon.

    She went on to confirm that the driver of the car which crashed into the school - a woman in her forties - has been arrested on suspicion of causing death by dangerous driving.

    We've also heard from the mayor of London, Sadiq Khan, who says his "heart goes out to everyone affected" by the "devastating" crash at the school.

    In a statement, Khan says he is in close contact with the Metropolitan Police as they investigate the full circumstances of the crash.

    “Please avoid the area to allow emergency services free access to help all those who need it. If you have any information about the incident please call police on 101," he adds.

    Detective Chief Superintendent Clair Kelland is asked about the next stages of the investigation.

    She says the priority will be to "identify all witnesses", to "view the CCTV" and interview the person in who has been arrested.

    The evidence will then be reviewed, Kelland says, but adds that "it's very early on" in the investigation.

    She also says there are a number of people being treated in hospital.

    The first question is from the BBC, with the reporter asking what will happen next in the investigation and what the tragedy will mean for parents and pupils.

    "The school community has been profoundly affected and is not in position to make further comment," John Tucker, chair of the board of governors at the school says.

    Det Chief Supt Kelland is asked how the accident could have happened in such a quiet area, but says she doesn't want people to speculate. She says there are a lot of witnesses and the scene was very crowded, busy and chaotic. She repeats that it is not being treated as a terror incident.

    Andy Pennick from the London Fire Brigade echoes the thoughts of the other emergency services, sending best wishes to the school and anyone affected.

    He says fire officers assisted with providing emergency access to the school.

    Pennick says support has been given to paramedics affected by the crash, adding that support will also be given to the school and wider community, as well as fire service staff who responded to tragic incident.

    Chief Paramedic Dr John Martin from the London Ambulance Service starts by saying "our thoughts are with all of those involved".

    He says at 09:54 "we received a 999 call to a collision" in Wimbledon and "multiple resources" were "dispatched", including "specialist critical care paramedics, London's Air Ambulance and 15 ambulances".

    Martin says 16 patients were treated on the scene but sadly one died. He said 10 patients have been taken to hospital.

    Det Chief Supt Kelland asks people not to speculate while police investigate the circumstances of the crash.

    She reiterates that what happened is not being treated as a terror incident and encourages the public to come forward with any information. She says that police have spoken to witnesses already.

    She says the woman in her 40s who has been arrested remains in police custody.

    Kelland asks people not to speculate while officers work to understand the circumstances of what happened.

    A witness to the aftermath of the crash says he saw a lot of "distraught parents rushing from the scene" within minutes of the incident.

    Zac Powell told reporters he had seen many people "picking up their children with expressions of relief or despair.

    "There was quite a lot of damage I could see. Even from a distance.

    "Within 15 minutes of my arrival there were armed police response units here at the scene".

    More from the Metropolitan Police's latest statement.

    Speaking about the death of a child, which police have just confirmed, Det Ch Supt Clair Kelland says it "is tragic news and our thoughts are with the girl’s family and friends, and everyone affected today."

    She adds: “We remain at the scene and are continuing our investigation into the full circumstances of the incident.”

    There have been further injuries, the Met says, adding that it is waiting for an update from the London Ambulance Service.

    We've just had an update from London Fire Brigade's deputy assistant commissioner, who says the force was called at 10:18 BST and crews spent just over two-and-a-half hours at The Study Prep on Camp Road.

    Andy Pennick continues: "On arrival, our crews provided safe access for emergency services to the incident scene by removing safety railings using specialist equipment.

    "Firefighters also assisted London Ambulance Service crews with providing immediate emergency care to members of the public."

    Mr Pennick adds a wellbeing centre will be set up at a local fire station and all fire staff will be "offered counselling as a priority".

  18. St George's Hospital treating 'a number of patients'published at 14:00 British Summer Time 6 July 2023

    We are still waiting for more details on those injured, but we've been given an update by a local hospital.

    St George's NHS Trust in Tooting - around four miles away from Camp Road and one of London's four major trauma centres - has told me staff have received "a number of patients" in connection with the incident at the school.

    Although the spokeswoman did not give a figure, she said the patients are being "cared for by our specialist clinical teams".

    St George's Hospital is the biggest hospital in London and operates one of the capital's four helipads - it means staff treat some of the most unwell and severely injured patients from across London and the south of England.

    Footage from above the school in Wimbledon earlier shows a bird's eye view of the crash, with many emergency vehicles present.

    Police cars line the roads outside the school and there are also ambulances at the scene.

    The Land Rover can be seen against the wall of the school building. There is a gap in the fencing around the grassy area the vehicle has driven into.

  20. A quiet area and a road that's 'difficult to speed on'published at 13:40 British Summer Time 6 July 2023

    We're hearing from a few people who know the area, who have expressed shock at the incident in a quiet part of London.

    Local MP Stephen Hammond says The Study Prep school is on a "relatively secluded" area known locally as the quadrangle .

    Speaking to BBC Radio 5 Live, he describes Camp Road as being a "very tight" place which is "very difficult to speed on because it's difficult to pass".

    "People tend to stop and pass each other. So it's really surprising that this incident happened and obviously one waits to hear the circumstances."

    The crash has also shaken up local residents, including a former parent at the school, Julie Attwood, who describes Wimbledon as being like a "little village" in London.
