There are 242 horses on parade today including three of those who were on the loose in central London in April after being spooked and bolting. Those pictures made global headlines.

Since then, Army vets and the Horse Trust have nurtured them back to good health and for the last few weeks they have been in London getting used to the sights and sounds of the city. Today they are back at work.

Tennyson, pictured above, was part of the Sovereign’s Escort. Vanquish and Trojan are also on parade.

The other two - Quaker and Vida, the grey which was seen covered in blood - continue their recovery in fields in the Chilterns. Both are being looked after by the Horse Trust.

Speaking on BBC One's Trooping the Colour 2024 programme, Sgt Michael Flood says the regiment is "unique", with members from the UK, Ireland and the Commonwealth.

"Once you're in the Irish Guards, we all are part of the family," he says.

Gdsm Colati Kitione is from Fiji, and says he is "really excited" to be taking part in Trooping the Colour.

"It's an honour and a privilege," he says.

As we mentioned earlier, Prime Minister Rishi Sunak is one of the thousands watching on as the pageantry begins in central London.

He's been spotted taking a picture on his phone during the parade, sitting next to his wife Akshata Murty.

Since Sunak called a summer general election last month, the monarchy has postponed any engagements "which may appear to divert attention or distract from the election campaign".

How did the crowds on the Mall react to the appearance of the Princess of Wales and the King?

They did what all modern crowds do, they held up their mobile phones. It’s the modern salute to anything that happens.

They cheer too, but it’s not easy to shout or clap when you’re focused on getting the picture to send back to show you were there.

And competing with the applause were the loud chants of anti-monarchy protesters, in a group near Buckingham Palace.

Horses seemed to get jumpy at the big yellow protest flags too.

As well as members of the Royal Family and Rishi Sunak, other important attendees will include three horses of the household cavalry which ran away and were injured after escaping through central London in April.

One of the horses – Tennyson – will be in the Sovereign’s Escort during the parade. The Army has said he will be ridden by the most experienced rider in the division.

Two of the other injured horses, Trojan and Vanquish, will provide the ceremonial guard for the official entrance to the Royal Palaces.

The two other horses that were injured are still being looking after by charity the Horse Trust.

A reminder of what happened here.

So there she is. Catherine, the Princess of Wales, appears at a carriage window, the first sighting of her at a public event since Christmas.

She’s in the Glass State Coach with her children and will appear later today on the Buckingham Palace balcony.

One of the most famous faces in the world is back at a royal event after some difficult months.

It’s a moment full of personal drama as well as public spectacle. It’s a fairytale carriage in a very real-life story.

The King appears before the crowds too, in a carriage rather than on horseback after his own cancer diagnosis.

Much has changed since they took this route on a much sunnier day a year ago.

  15. Who is leading the royal procession?published at 10:53 British Summer Time 15 June 2024

    Sarah Campbell
BBC Royal Correspondent, reporting from The Mall

Trooping the Colour is beginning as a parade starts down the Mall

Leading the royal procession and making sure everything runs like clockwork is Lt Col James Shaw - the Brigade Major.

He will be riding Sovereign's Shadow. Shadow is a fantastic horse he tells me - but has a problem with drain covers.

So although Lt Col Shaw is supposed to ride in a straight line - Shadow meanders down The Mall avoiding the drain covers.

    Something to look out for…
