  2. UK's wettest spot sees 1,000mm of December rainpublished at 11:23

    Figures from the Met Office up to 29 December show that all of its locations have seen record rainfall totals for December so far.

    The wettest spot has been Capel Curig in North Wales, which has recorded just 1,000mm of rain, compared to an average of just over 300mm.

  4. Hundreds of homes without power in Walespublished at 11:14

    Almost 900 properties were left without power as Storm Frank hit Wales on Wednesday morning.

    More than half of those affected were in Carmarthenshire, but power has since been restored to many of them.

    Homes have also been affected in Pembrokeshire, Swansea and Ceredigion.

  5. Resident 'trapped in Port Glasgow flat' by flood waterspublished at 11:05

    Michael O’Neil, who lives in Port Glasgow, Inverclyde, on the west coast of Scotland, is trapped in his flat which is surrounded by flood waters.

    He said: "The building is surrounded by a wall. The waters are right up to the gates. It would be waist high if I went into it.

    "The water is only just starting to recede.

    "It’s been quite windy here. I could hear it in the roof – I’m on the top floor. We had really heavy rain too.“

  9. Environment Agency head returns from Barbadospublished at 10:43

    Sir Philip Dilley, chairman of the Environment Agency, external, is heading to meet flood victims in the North of England after arriving back from the Caribbean.

    His return to the UK comes after criticism over his decision to holiday in Barbados at a time when the country faces some of the worst floods it has experienced in decades.

    Sir Philip visited Cumbria earlier in the month, in the aftermath of floods that affected the area following Storm Desmond.

  10. High winds close Clifton Suspension Bridgepublished at 10:43

    For only the second time in its 151-year history, the Clifton Suspension Bridge in Bristol has been closed because of high winds.

    Gusts of 55mph were recorded, with bridge master Dave Anderson saying he was worried for cyclists and high-sided vehicles crossing the "exposed" structure.

  11. Aberdeenshire: Homes evacuated as River Dee bursts bankspublished at 10:16

    The BBC's Steven Duff in Aberdeen has spoken to emergency services. He says: "Homes are being evacuated in Ballater in Aberdeenshire due to flooding of the River Dee. 

    "The Scottish Fire and Rescue service says crews on the ground have requested boats to help reach some properties. They're being brought in from Perth and Elgin. 

    "It's not yet clear how many homes are affected."

    Among teams helping communities affected by recent floods is Team Rubicon, a charity of former military veterans, external.

    The BBC's Phillip Norton, in Tadcaster, met volunteer Dougie Clark, who said: "We've done operations in Nepal after the earthquake and in South Carolina where 60,000 homes were flooded.

    "But anywhere you go in the world communities want to help themselves. This community has been exceptionally resilient."

  17. Storm Frank leaves Irish homes without powerpublished at 09:40

    Gales and torrential rain have also been causing problems in the Republic of Ireland.

    About 4,200 homes and businesses remain without power in many parts of the country.

    There has also been flooding, road closures and suspension of some rail services.

  18. Scottish Borders: 300 homes evacuatedpublished at 09:06

    About 300 homes are being evacuated in Hawick as a precaution, Scottish Borders Council says. 

    They are also considering evacuations in Peebles.
