    Which? executive director Richard Lloyd, said: “Our report shows that commuters are getting a raw deal from their train operator. 

    "Whether it's dirty facilities on the train, overcrowding or delayed trains, it is clear operators need to up their game.”

    He said rail operators need to do "much more to treat their customers fairly".

    The operator of the Gatwick Express, Southern, Thameslink and Great Northern says it is "working hard" to improve performance, but rebuilding work at London Bridge station is partly to blame. 

    "The recent National Rail Passenger Survey showed a much higher satisfaction rate. However, what both surveys show is there is still much to do to meet our passengers’ expectations," a spokesman added. 

    "The Which? survey of fewer than 1,200 passenger journeys has to be seen in the context of the 1.1 million passenger journeys made on GTR every weekday."

    Southeastern has blamed long-running improvement work at London Bridge for disruption to train services in the South East.

    "We're part way through a £70m investment programme, refurbishing our trains and stations, providing more frontline employees for passengers, improving customer service training and providing more real time information during journeys," a spokesman said.

    He added the operator was "working hard to improve punctuality and minimise delay".

    The fifth annual Which? rail satisfaction survey says commuters are still suffering the worst service and operators aren’t informing passengers when they’re due compensation.

    Issues raised by the nearly 7,000 people polled included overcrowded trains, poor value for money, dirty carriages and problems with complaints handling.

    Just under a third of commuters experienced delays on their last journey, the survey found.

       Hull Trains was second with a customer score of 73%.

    Edward Welsh from the Rail Delivery Group told BBC Breakfast: "We know we need to do better.

    "We need to improve."

    Speaking to Charlie Stayt, he added: "We know we need to run more trains on time more often."
