  1. Seaside-goers tell how they 'love the clouds, the sea and the atmosphere'published at 16:01 British Summer Time 3 August 2016

    Lloyd Watson
    BBC News Online

Not all originally from the North East but living here now - John, Raymond, Jean and Maureen wouldn't want to be anywhere else on a day like today.

Maureen loves the clouds, the sea and the atmosphere, while Raymond thinks Tynemouth is great (when it's not raining!).

John's three words to describe the resort were "Tynemouth's beautiful vista".

He then tucked into his melting ice cream.

    Ian Parker

Several attempts have been made in the past to redevelop the former Tropicana outdoor swimming pool in Weston-super-Mare which closed in 2000.

The derelict lido, which enjoyed its heyday in the 1960s, has been empty since 2000.

Last summer for five weeks it was transformed into Dismaland, a "bemusement park" created by the street artist Banksy with more than 150,000 visitors and raising an estimated £20m for the town.

I know I'm at work, but I couldn't resist sampling the local take on that great British seaside delicacy - a stick of rock.

I got chatting to kiosk owner while making my selection. He didn't want to be named but said they don't sell anywhere near as much as they used to.

"They just aren't as popular," he said.

The number of events linked to Newquay's surf scene is helping to expand tourism beyond the traditional six-week summer holiday, according to a local business owner.

A local charter boat owner is one of a number of business owners who have told me that Newquay has improved hugely over the past few years.

    Marcus White
    BBC News

A handful of families have been braving Hayling Island's stony beach, despite a stiff breeze today.

Madison Goodwin, Esme Tanner and their grandmother Wendy Overthrow from Evesham were feeling a bit windswept.

But Wendy's husband Gary, wearing just his shorts, isn't letting the breezy conditions get to him saying: "I like to just get away on holiday - it's nice to have a break."

After a cloudy morning, we're finally seeing some blue skies over Clacton and the pier is getting busier.

At 360m (1,181ft) long, it might be dwarfed by its Southend neighbour at 2.16km (1.34 miles), but there is still plenty to do.

  18. 'A pit of everlasting squalor?'published at 14:39 British Summer Time 3 August 2016

    BBC News England

According to a recent report, external, nine out of the 10 most deprived neighbourhoods in the UK are seaside communities.

About half of those questioned on behalf of holiday firm Butlins said they considered the seaside "a bit downmarket", with about 40% saying the British seaside was "tacky".

    Run down shop

This has been challenged, though, by the Mayor of Skegness who questions whether British seaside resorts really are "languishing in a pit of everlasting squalor".
