    Nazim Ali from Bradford has returned from his fourth aid mission helping Syrian refugees.

    He spent six days in the town of Reyhanli, which is on the border of Turkey and Syria, handing out food, clothing and blankets to people living in makeshift camps. 

    He says he does it to send a message to the Syrian people that they are not alone:

    Bomb disposal teams were called out to five schools in North Yorkshire in the wake of government advice about a potentially hazardous chemical, it's been revealed.

    The government warning about stocks of what's known as 2,4 dinitrophenylhydrazine sparked a flurry of calls to the Army at the end of last year.

    Bomb disposal experts carried out hundreds of explosions around the country between October and December 2016.

    The schools affected in North Yorkshire were Scarborough College, Bootham School, Queen Ethelburga's, Ashville College and Sherburn High School, it's emerged.

    They're going head-to-head at the BBC Countryfile Awards after being nominated by presenter John Craven - who is originally from Leeds.

    That's what happened to Sue Thrower from Doncaster who was in Gambia when the alarm was raised by the Foreign Office, external for holidaymakers to "get out" during the current crisis there.

    Sue says she only found out about the evacuation through a friend she met on holiday.

    Two men carrying what's thought to be a knife have tried to rob a home in Bradford.

    The pair forced their way into the house on Northdale Mount at about 20:20 on Tuesday.

    They threatened the people living there and searched the house for jewellery but left empty-handed.

    A third man was waiting outside in a black VW Golf, in which they then drove off.

    At a time when many hospitals are under pressure and don't have enough beds to cope with demand, Northallerton's Friarage hospital has been recognised for its work in reducing admissions to its surgical ward.

    Its Medical and Surgical Assessment Unit has been shortlisted for the Value in Healthcare National Awards.

    What has this system meant for patients? It means those who aren't ill enough to stay in hospital can be treated as outpatients. The hospital says this has resulted in:

    • A 34% reduction in non-elective admissions to the surgical ward 
    • A 46% increase in elective activity
    • Accident and emergency performance being maintained at the Friarage Hospital
    • "Very high" patient satisfaction with "excellent feedback"

    Sheffield Eagles have re-signed former back-rower Sam Scott on a one-year contract.

    Scott starred for the Eagles in their Championship Grand Final success in 2012, and was also a member of the side which was defeated in the final in 2011.

    He returns to the club, external after a five-year absence and becomes the club's fifth close season signing following the arrivals of Jordan Cox, Will Hope, Perry Whiteley and Kyle Trout.

    The search is on for Larry, a four-month-old pug puppy who's been stolen from his home in Doncaster.

    Larry was taken from the garden, external of his owner's home in Stainforth between 22:15 and 22:20 on Saturday 7 January.

    He's a black pug and has been micro-chipped, and is said to be very small for his age.

    His owner is "incredibly distressed" by Larry's disappearance, according to South Yorkshire Police.

    Anyone with information about his whereabouts is being asked to contact police.

  9. Man arrested after sexual assault on 11-year-old in Leedspublished at 09:58 Greenwich Mean Time 19 January 2017

    A 72-year-old man has been arrested after a sexual assault on an 11-year-old girl in Rothwell, Leeds.

    The man was arrested last night following the incident, which happened on Commercial Street last Thursday. 

    He remains in custody this morning.

    About £10,000 worth of gardening tools and clothing have been recovered by North Yorkshire Police after officers followed a car in Leeds which was linked to thefts in York.

    The discovery was made in the early hours of this morning. 

    Police say they've found about 40 small and large power tools, safety equipment, clothing and garden tools.  

    If you've had anything stolen overnight, it might be worth calling North Yorkshire Police as they may have found your goods.  

  11. Pledge of trust over Sheffield's widely-criticised tree-felling schemepublished at 09:39 Greenwich Mean Time 19 January 2017

    No more "dawn raids" and no lack of transparency are both being promised over Sheffield Council's controversial tree-felling programme.

    The authority now says it wants to "regain the trust of people in Sheffield".

    This is all about the way the council's gone about executing a £2bn plan under which more than 3,300 trees have been removed across the city since 2012.

    Party drug nitrous oxide is being sold illegally across Leeds via Facebook, a BBC investigation has found.

  14. Fire crews tackle barn fire near Great Ouseburnpublished at 09:18

    Firefighters using breathing apparatus are currently tackling a barn fire at Great Ouseburn, near York.

    Four appliances from Boroughbridge, Acomb, Knaresborough and York and a water dowser are at the scene.

    A spokesman for the North Yorkshire Fire Service says between 20 and 30 large straw bales and a vehicle are currently on fire.

    Following two arrests over the death of a teenager in Rotherham earlier this week, a 26- year-old woman has now been bailed as investigations continue.

    Leonne Weeks, 16, was stabbed to death, external and her body was found on a pathway in Dinnington on Monday morning.

    An 18 year-old man remains in custody, police say.

  17. Listen: Tadcaster Bridge 'will be opened by end of month'published at 08:47 Greenwich Mean Time 19 January 2017

    Tadcaster's flood-damaged bridge will be reopened by the end of January, according to the county councillor responsible for it.  

    It had been due to be completed on Friday 27 January, but bad weather has hampered the completion date.

    The bridge was partially washed away in December 2015 after river levels on the Wharfe reached record levels.  

    Since then, the town has been split in two with anyone visiting or living there having to travel hundreds of extra miles over the year to get from one side to the other.

    The "steel city" of Sheffield isn't quite so steely when it comes to neighbourly warmth, it appears.

    In fact it's been dubbed the best city for neighbourliness by a new survey.

    Alongside this title, the same survey - carried out by the Co-op - reveals just one in four people over the age of 45 doesn't have a neighbour they can call on for a favour or for help. 

    For younger people up to about 35, it seems to be an even more gloomy picture: just one in six say they could call upon a neighbour for help.

    Truck-stopping bollards and structures have been installed around shopping areas of Leeds city centre in an effort to prevent terrorists from carrying out a Berlin style attack.

    Leeds City Council says the bollards have been installed in light of recent events and there is "no specific threat" to the city:

  20. Murder inquiry in Ovenden after man's deathpublished at 08:17 Greenwich Mean Time 19 January 2017

    Investigations are continuing this morning following the death of a man in Ovenden, near Halifax.

    Officers were called to Athol Close, off Athol Road, at about 13:15 on Wednesday following reports a man had been attacked.

    A man was found with serious injuries and was treated by paramedics but later died. The man has not been identified.

    Two men aged 33 and 25 have been arrested on suspicion of murder.
