    Commuters across the North East face disruption after staff at Northern Rail began a 24-hour strike at midnight.

    The RMT union says it's angry at plans to introduce driver-only trains.

    Management say they want a negotiated solution and deny jobs will be lost.

    Northern said it planned to run  only 40% of its normal services, external  with trains running on its busier routes between 07:00 and 19:00. 

    The firm said it would run 300 rail replacement bus services.

  4. Train firm puts out bus and rail timetables for strike daypublished at 07:11 Greenwich Mean Time 13 March 2017

    Around 40% of northern trains will run today, as staff strike over the work of guards on trains .

    There will be train timetables for Barrow through to Lancaster and Workington and Carlisle across to Newcastle

    There'll be bus services from Windermere to Oxenholme and Workington to Carlisle.

    There are delays on the region's rails this morning with many services cancelled or replaced by buses due to strike action.

    Southern, external says most services will operate as normal today.

    Gatwick Express will operate a full service between London Victoria and Gatwick Airport/Brighton.

    On the map below - which you can also see  here, external  - routes with an altered service are shown in brown or grey.

    • On routes shown in grey there will be no Southern service.
    • On routes shown in brown, passengers are advised that there will be a reduced service.

    Key alterations include:

    • No Southern services between Clapham Junction and Milton Keynes Central via Kensington Olympia/Watford Junction
    • No Southern service between Leatherhead and Guildford
    • No Rye–Ashford International shuttle services during the morning and evening peaks. However Southern plans to operate most services between Ashford International and Brighton. Replacement buses are planned between Rye and Ashford International.
    • Some trains between London Bridge and Brighton, Eastbourne or Littlehampton will not operate
    • Some services between Brighton and Seaford/Eastbourne/Hastings/Ashford and between Brighton and Bognor/Littlehampton/Portsmouth Harbour/Southampton Central will not operate and others will have fewer carriages than normal
    • Most services that only run between Brighton and Hove will not operate

    Replacement bus services will operate between Ashford International, Rye and Hastings.

    The RMT's 30th strike day in its dispute with Southern over plans to make trains driver-only-operated (DOO) has spread to the north of England with guards and drivers working for Merseyrail and Northern also taking action.
