    Ann Widdecombe

"The people have once again voted to leave," says newly elected MEP Ann Widdecombe.

"This sends a very clear message that if the politicians don't sort out Brexit then at the next general election both big parties will face carnage."

When asked about the success of Remain parties such as the Lib Dems, she says "there are numerous reasons why people might vote for them."

"But there is only one reason to vote for us - and the Brexit Party have topped the poll."

Liberal Democrat MEP Catherine Bearder has called on all remainers to unite behind her party after they won three seats in the South East.

Ms Bearder retained her seat while she was joined by Antony Hook and Judith Bunting.

She said the total number of votes for remain-supporting parties outstripped those for the Brexit Party.

Ms Bearder said: "Now it is absolutely vital all the remain groups come behind the number one party, the Liberal Democrats, to fight Brexit.

"It is not inevitable, our place is in the European Union leading the European Union and shaping the future."

Brexit Party leader Nigel Farage said the success of his party across England sends a "massive message" that Britain should leave the EU.

Mr Farage, who retained his seat in the South East with three of the other 10 seats also going to his party, said: "We were supposed to (leave) on 29 March and we haven't - there is a massive message here. The new date is 31 October.

"We in the Brexit Party have got men and women of considerable business experience, we want to be part of that negotiating team and take responsibility for what is happening.

"If we don't leave on 31 October then the scores seen today will be repeated in a General Election and we are getting ready for it."

  10. Elections are 'not clear win for the leavers'published at 00:23 British Summer Time 27 May 2019

Though The Brexit Party has won many more seats than the other parties, the night is "not a clear win for the leavers", according to Georgia Roberts of BBC Westminster.

She said in many places the Liberal Democrats came second while the Greens have also won a few seats, both parties being remain.

Georgia said: "Some people are arguing that if you add up the total vote share of the remain parties, they are on par with the Brexit Party so there isn't a clear win for the leavers.

"It's quite a valid argument to make.

"It will be interesting to see if Change UK, who have been non-existent in these results, come out and say 'let's form a remain alliance' with the Lib Dems and Greens."

  11. West Midlands gives Farage thumping victorypublished at 00:14 British Summer Time 27 May 2019

    Patrick Burns

The region which registered the highest proportion of Leave votes in the 2016 referendum has now delivered an equally thumping victory to Nigel Farage’s new Brexit Party.

Over half a million West Midlands voters have sent three Brexit Party MEPs to the new European Parliament.

That matches the number achieved last time by UKIP, who have been reduced to fringe players this time round, finishing second last, just ahead of Change UK who, with no seats in the new parliament, both face serious questions about whether either of them have a future here.

The Brexit Party drew support from both the Conservatives and Labour, who both lose one seat and now have one each in what will be seen as a punishment for their failure either to deliver Brexit on time, or to find an effective compromise at Westminster.

The Conservatives finished fifth behind the Greens, who now have their party’s first West Midlands MEP.

The other big message of the night is that Remain supporters congregated around the Liberal Democrats and to a lesser extent the Greens, both of whom may be ruing their failure to reach some sort of electoral accommodation which might have prevented them from splitting the vote.

What’s already clear is that these results will have a heavy impact not only on the Conservative leadership race, but also on the debate within Labour over whether or not it should clarify its position as a party of Remain or a party that really does want Britain to leave the EU.

  12. Ex-MEP 'devastated' by losspublished at 00:05 British Summer Time 27 May 2019

Clare Moody, the former Labour MEP for the South West, said she is "devastated" after losing her seat.

The Brexit Party took three of the region's six seats with the Liberal Democrats getting two and the Greens one.

Ms Moody, who had been elected in 2014, said: "Clearly it's a devastating vote.

"The voters have told us clearly they want clarity around Labour's position on Brexit.

"I hope sincerely that our position moves on and becomes much more clear because the country needs a strong Labour party that will stand up and give clarity and honesty to the voters."

  13. Brexit Party triumphs in the North Eastpublished at 00:02 British Summer Time 27 May 2019

    Richard Moss
    Political Editor, BBC Look North

From Berwick to Barnard Castle, the Brexit Party topped the polls in the North East - giving them 39% of the vote and two of the three MEPs.

It’s the first time since the regional constituencies were introduced in 1999 that Labour hasn’t topped the poll in the North East of England, although the party will be relieved it saw off a strong Liberal Democrat challenge to keep one of its two seats from 2014.

The Brexit Party’s winning candidates believe the result shows people in the North East want to leave the EU without a deal, but in reality voters remain split.

Other parties reported frustration from voters that Brexit remained a live issue.

A resolution now still seems months away, meaning the North East’s new Brexit Party MEPs will be heading to Brussels at the end of June.

For the Conservatives it was a predictably bruising night as they trailed in fifth behind the Green Party.

    North East winners

Judith Kirton-Darling, who took the third seat for Labour, said: "Labour has a good story to sell about what we've delivered in the European Union, but by not fighting this election with all our political might we've left the space for others.

"Tonight's result is not an endorsement of our Brexit policy, it's a final warning that things must change if we want to win a general election."
