    The amazing fundraising efforts of Captain Tom Moore have topped £30m.

    The 100-year-old war veteran originally aimed to raise £1,000 by walking 100 laps of his garden.

    But almost one and half million people have since made donations on the Just Giving website.

    The money will be used by NHS Charities Together on a number of initiatives.

    An RAF flypast was the highlight of a number of memorable moments that have marked Capt Tom's birthday so far this morning.

    Michael Ball also sang "Happy Birthday" to the 100-year-old - the pair reached number one with charity single You'll Never Walk Alone.

    There was also a message from PM Boris Johnson who described Capt Tom as a "point of life".

    As of 08:30 this morning seven of the top 10 trending terms on Twitter relate to Captain Tom Moore as people wish the 100-year-old a happy birthday.

    There have been 14.2K tweets using the phrase "Happy Birthday Sir" with others celebrating his new title of Colonel.

    A lot of people have included the phrase #TomorrowWillBeAGoodDay, a quote Captain Tom gave when asked about his message to the British public.

    This morning he updated his quote for his birthday to say it will be a good day.

    There was an unmistakable sense of conviction in Tom Moore's voice as he addressed the camera after completing his walk.

    "To all those people who are finding it difficult at the moment," he said, addressing a British public who have seen life turned upside down by coronavirus. "The sun will shine on you again, and the clouds will go away."

    Moments before, the then 99-year-old war veteran had completed the 100th lap of a sponsored walk around his Bedfordshire garden. With service medals pinned to his breast pocket, and clutching his walking frame, he crossed the finish line at a slow but determined pace.

    In just a few days, Mr Moore, nicknamed Captain Tom by his growing legion of fans, had risen from nowhere to the status of national treasure.Here's how he did it.

    He said: "I've been so proud of him since I was three - I've lived with him since I was three, but this highlights how much of an incredible man he is and I couldn't be prouder of the person he is and the character that he has shown throughout this event."
