    More than 3,500 beacons have been lit up around the world to mark the Queen's Platinum Jubilee.

    The Queen began the ceremony on Thursday night by touching a globe representing the Commonwealth nations, symbolically sending a chain of lights from Windsor Castle to Buckingham Palace.

    The chain included dozens of areas across Yorkshire and Lincolnshire - some of which are featured below.

    The lengths some people have gone to in marking the Queen's Platinum Jubilee are remarkable.

    In this case it's the full length of a wall.

    This huge depiction of a smiling Queen Elizabeth II was spotted in Moulton near Spalding in Lincolnshire.

  4. Vehicles celebrate 'glue that keeps the country together'published at 13:22 British Summer Time 5 June 2022

    People in the North Yorkshire town of Northallerton are enjoying what's been described as a "right Royal Jubilee celebration".

    A traction engine and classic cars

    There are even a couple of princesses attending - though they're not fully paid-up legitimate members of the royal family.

    And the only traffic on the normally busy street is a collection of classic cars and a traction engine which are already attracting attention.

    Graham Bell from Love Northallerton said a big team effort with lots of background planning had been needed to make the day happen which would culminate in a "a big knees-up on the town square".

    He said today was very special and added: "Ever since I've been born and lived the Queen's been there and I just don't like to think of a day when she won't be there.

    "She symbolises stability, she's the glue that keeps the country together."

    Crowds of up to 40,000 people are believed to have taken in Platinum Jubilee celebrations along the Humber estuary.

    As well as a flotilla of 70 boats, people on the Hessle foreshore on Thursday evening got the chance to see one of the Jubilee beacons lit - and then a huge firework show.

    The event included highlights of the televised Jubilee celebrations, street food, and a specially commissioned archive film of the Royal family and their connections to Doncaster over the years.

    Doncaster Council said the event was off "due to the weather conditions", but said The Big Lunch , externalin Market Square would continue as planned.

    The Platinum Jubilee spirit is good news for people using public transport in West Yorkshire.

    Passengers can travel for free on buses as events take place to celebrate the Queen's 70-year reign.

    The region's mayor Tracy Brabin said it would make it easier for people to attend celebrations as well as boost public transport use.

    Ms Brabin said: "If you're attending events in Saltaire, Ripponden, Longwood, Morley or Wrenthorpe, going shopping in one of our town and city centres or just visiting family and friends, there will be buses to take you there and back for free.

    "I often use the bus to travel in West Yorkshire and I hope people who don't normally do this will take a bus journey and be encouraged to use bus travel more often."

    No ticket is required and passengers can make as many trips as they like within West Yorkshire on Arriva, First and Transdev buses.

    Well for Mary Viscomi and Brad Wallington that was easy - book it on the Queen's Platinum Jubilee.

    The pair got hitched at Lincoln Cathedral on Thursday - and knew when the Jubilee dates were announced, it would be a great day for a big day.

    There's some sad news for people who were hoping to attend the Platinum Jubilee Picnic at Boultham Park in Lincoln - the event has been postponed.

    The city council said rain meant there was no alternative.

    The Mayor of Lincoln, Councillor Rosanne Kirk, said: "We are extremely disappointed the weather was not on our side today.

    "We waited until the last possible moment to make a decision in case the forecast changed.

    Councillor Kirk said she hoped to join the Boultham Park community in celebrating the Queen’s Platinum Jubilee "at a later date".

    However, it's not all doom and gloom as a Platinum Jubilee party is due to begin at midday on the Dean's Green at Lincoln Cathedral.

    Samantha Mellows from the cathedral said: "It's not every day you get a 70th anniversary and I don't think we'll see another in our lifetime, so it's a chance to really celebrate it

    "And we've had a hard time recently as a country so let's all get out and have a lovely time together."

    "Mary, Queen of Scots" opened a huge jubilee event in South Yorkshire on behalf of the current Queen as organisers said they were "gobsmacked" by the huge turnout.

    The nemesis of Elizabeth I was imprisoned for 14 years at Sheffield's Manor Park Lodge, just a short distance from Norfolk Park, where an estimated 10,000 people enjoyed the sun and entertainment on Thursday afternoon.

    Opening the event, "Mary" said: "I am honoured to be allowed out of my prison to open this great event.

    "Your Queen Elizabeth II - my 11th-great-granddaughter - has ruled over this country my son James gifted to her, after the terrible Tudors.

    "She has ruled with dignity and compassion, with her wise head staying on her shoulders at all times, through good and bad."

    Organiser Roger Hart, from Sheffield Vulcan Rotary Club, said he was "gobsmacked" so many people had turned up.

    Mr Hart said: "I think it tells us that the Queen is more popular than some people want to know.

    "I think the monarchy puts the great in Britain and so I'm a great supporter."

    Fresh from winning the competition to be the UK's City of Culture in 2025, Bradford also hosted a huge Platinum Jubilee party in City Park.

    Thousands of people attended the celebration in the city centre which saw a host of attractions.

    Among the crowds was Deputy Lieutenant Manoj Joshi.

    Mr Joshi, who helps with royal duties in the region, said he hoped the Queen would continue to reign for a long time to come.

    Looking back on 75 years since the partition of India, Mr Joshi said for many South Asians the Queen was a great example of service.

    He added: "The Queen is also the head of the Commonwealth, in which our South Asian countries are members and, therefore, we have a special celebration to mark her Platinum Jubilee.

    "That teaches us that wherever we come from, we live in the United Kingdom and we should live in peace and harmony and work for the greater good, which Her Majesty has done throughout out her life."

    What a sight for the thousands of people who lined both banks of the River Humber on Thursday night to see the Platinum Jubilee celebrations begin in the skies.

    The flypast by a Spitfire and Hurricane marked the beginning of a flotilla of about 70 ships of all sizes which assembled on the river before setting sail for the Humber Bridge.

    It's thought about 40,000 people craned their necks to see the two fighter planes fly between the south bank towers.

    This one in Wakefield was visited by the BBC's Charles Heslett on Saturday.

    We gave him the job of counting the number of union flags on Andy Wilcock's suit - we'd tell you the total, but he's still counting them...!

    Andy said: "This old thing? I thought I'd make a bit of an effort with it. I thought, why not blend into the occasion?

    "It's just fantastic to get together. I think it's just great for the community as a well as the country as a whole."
