  1. Herts school fined after girl paralysed for lifepublished at 12:34

    A private school has been ordered to pay over £140,000 after a 13-year-old girl was permanently paralysed when a swing collapsed.

    St Albans Crown Court ordered Queenswood School in Brookman's Park, Hertfordshire, to pay a £50,000 fine and £90,693 in costs after the pupil was hit on the head and neck by a heavy wooden cross beam in September 2011, leaving her with spinal injuries.

  2. Hertfordshire drop-in centre facing £15,000 bill to carry onpublished at 12:18

    A centre for adults with learning disabilities in Letchworth could be forced to close after its building was sold.

    Jackie's Drop-In Centre, external can move to a new building if £15,000 can be raised to refurbish it to make it fit for 200-plus members.

    Founder Jackie Nealon says the centre knew the Letchworth Heritage Foundation (LHF), external would eventually sell the current premises. The LHF said it had given the centre another temporary building and a £10,000 grant to "give them time to start the long-term planning they need to do as they develop and grow."

    Two men charged following a dog attack in Hertfordshire are due to enter pleas at St Albans Crown Court today.

    A woman was seriously injured by two German Shepherds at Warren Farm in Great Amwell last October.

    Nijamul Islam, 42, from Edgware, and Mijanur Malik, 21, from Edmonton, are charged with owning dogs that were dangerously out of control and causing unnecessary suffering to animals.

  4. Bedford bypass crash: Inquest opens into couple's deathpublished at 11:34

    An inquest opens today into the death of a husband and wife in a crash on the A421 Bedford bypass last week.

    Martin Spratt, 70, and his wife Evelyn, 68, from Buckden in Cambridgeshire, died on Tuesday, 12 January following a collision involving four cars and two lorries.

    A centre for adults with learning disabilities in Letchworth could be forced to close, after its building was sold.

  6. London Olympic bomb hoaxer loses appealpublished at 10:50

    A barrister from Buckinghamshire who falsely warned of a nuclear attack on the London Olympics has failed to clear his name.

    Michael Shrimpton, 58, from Justins Glebe in Wendover, was jailed for a year for making a series of hoax calls which claimed a shadowy Nazi network was behind the plot and had acquired cruise missiles from a sunken Russian submarine.

    At the Appeal Court yesterday, his legal team claimed his trial was unfair due to alleged repeated "interjections and exchanges" from the trial judge, but the court backed the judge's handling of the case.

  7. Travel: Accident on A418published at 10:32

    The A418 Bierton Road in Aylesbury is closed in both directions at the Manor Road junction due to a two-vehicle accident.

    Buckinghamshire Fire and Rescue has tweeted, external to say a woman was released from one of the cars.

    A spokesman from haulage company D&R Hankins said the driver had been to a farm in Walkern and was on his way back to base when his sat nav had taken him through the narrow village streets.

    He said there was "minimal damage" to the lorry and a recovery vehicle was sent to "manoeuvre" it out of its predicament.

    Wycombe Wanderers FA Cup adventure is over after they lost their third round replay 2-0 at Premier League side Aston Villa.

    It was 0-0 for 75 minutes at Villa Park before defender Ciaran Clark opened the scoring for Villa and Idrissa Gueye guided in a second.

    Chairboys manager, Gareth Ainsworth, said: "I just thought we ran out of steam towards the end... I've said to the boys, [if] you perform like that in League Two, we'll win a lot more than we lose."

    A paedophile from Bedfordshire, who was part of a gang that attacked babies, toddlers and pre-school children, has died after being found unconscious in his prison cell.

    Robin Hollyson, 31, from Luton, who had befriended a couple with a baby, was jailed for 24 years last September.

    Hollyson, who had changed his name to James King, was found in his cell at Bristol prison on Friday and died in hospital on Sunday. The BBC understands his death is not being treated as suspicious.

  13. More than 70,000 drivers find for speeding in 30mph zonespublished at 09:02

    Latest figures show more than 70,000 drivers were fined for speeding in 30mph zones in Bedfordshire, Hertfordshire and Cambridgeshire last year.

    In at least one case someone was clocked doing 90mph.

    Insp Phil Bloor from the Beds, Cambs and Herts Road Policing Unit said: "There is no justification for driving too quickly in areas where there are a lot of pedestrians."

    Commuters using London Midland and Virgin train services from Milton Keynes into London face disruption this morning. Damage to overhead wires further north, between Rugby and Northampton, are causing delays and cancellations.

    Meanwhile, one lane is blocked on the anti-clockwise M25 before J23 for the A1(M) due to an accident involving a lorry and a coach.
