Highways England, external has said a crack in the Gade Valley viaduct, which has closed the anti-clockwise M25 between J21a for St Albans and J20 for the A41, must be repaired sooner rather than later.
Spokesman Francis Cluett said the crack - which carries the M25 over the railway, Station Road, the River Gade and farmland - was discovered during a routine inspection yesterday.
He said: "The crack is in one of the stiffeners in one of the beams holding up the bridge. It's quite small at the moment, but we've really got to get that repaired now before it grows any further and creates more damage."
