    The knock-on effect is being felt for travellers today after this morning's derailment of a London Midlands train in a tunnel just outside of Watford. 

    Peter Lloyd took this photo of a very busy Euston Station. 

    ​London Midland, external is advising customers not to travel unless absolutely necessary, as journeys are being "delayed by up to 60 minutes, revised or cancelled".

    Another commuter Jack Burgess was a passenger on the 06:34 London Euston to Birmingham New Street train, which clipped the derailed train.

    "Around 07:00 we went through the tunnel near Watford and there was a really loud scraping noise against the side of the train that got louder and louder, and then a very loud thud, which made the train bounce up and down a lot.

    "The train then stopped and the driver got on the intercom, sounding very panicky," he said.

    "He kept telling everyone to stay in their seats. We were stationary for four hours or so.

    "I just got off a train at Milton Keynes and they're not letting me go to Birmingham."

    "A little hairy". 

    That's how commuter Henry described this morning's derailment in a Watford tunnel. 

    He was on the train travelling from Berkhamsted into London that derailed and said he sat for an "awfully long time".

    He was at the back of the train so he said he didn't feel the full impact, but he felt a "slide, sharp brake, a little skid" and then the train "stopped suddenly".

    He said passengers were well looked after, but the day has been "long".

    He's not putting his feet up though, as he's getting on another train into London to go to work. 

  5. Train derailment: All passengers moved to safetypublished at 12:57 British Summer Time 16 September 2016
    Breaking

    Network Rail says all passengers, external from both trains have now been moved to safety following this morning's derailment close to Watford. 

    It adds two of the four lines through the area are now open. 

    Services are running, but it will be some time before a normal service resumes.

    Radio reporter Sarah Lowther, was on the 06:47 Berkamsted train that was involved in the derailment and described the two trains "kissing each other" in a tunnel. 

    She says there's been a "Dunkirk spirit" on board as passengers helped one another. 

    She told Morning Money radio she was worried about the driver, as he had a bad back after the crash.

    She added "The trees were taken down from the side of the rail line last year. Trees have roots, roots hold the mud. The mud had nothing to cling on to.

    "It was the first time I've actually flown on a train; when we came off the tracks I assumed the brace position. 

    She says a pregnant woman was on board.

  9. Train derailment: Nearly 400 passengers on board - fire servicepublished at 12:14 British Summer Time 16 September 2016

    Hertfordshire Fire Service says 384 passengers were on board the two trains that crashed near Watford. 

    London Midland say staff are currently getting passengers off both trains and onto rescue trains, but this could take some time as "it's in a tunnel, phone signal is bad and the route is busy even with only two lines open". 

    The firm says the line is the busiest in Europe in terms of combined passenger and freight traffic, with a train passing through Watford Junction every 90 seconds.

    Clive Todd was on his usual morning commute into London from Hemel Hempstead this morning. 

    He told me he was on the train that derailed and was only a few carriages away from where it came off the tracks. He saw part of the train "at a right angle".

    He said as the train approached the Watford tunnel he heard an "'almighty noise", the train "shuddered" and then came to a "quick halt". 

    He told the BBC it was "scary stuff", it's already been a "long day" and he's now going home "to drink".

  12. Passengers disembark onto rescue trainpublished at 11:29 British Summer Time 16 September 2016

    Following conflicting reports, we've now had confirmation from Network Rail that the two London Midland trains that crashed in the Hunton Bridge tunnel near Watford this morning are still stuck in the tunnel.

    But passengers are now being removed from the carriages. This is a Virgin rescue train that has taken stranded commuters this morning.

    The trains that crashed are inside the tunnel's north entrance, which is about two miles north of Watford Junction. Network Rail said both trains were both going "slowly" when the incident happened.

    Ian Saunders was on one of the two London Midland trains that became stranded in the Hunton Bridge tunnel after this morning's derailment. 

    He's now on a rescue train which has moved past the landslide and is being led to Kings Langley. 

    He said the London Midland staff, fire crews and police have been "great".

    London Midland trains say it can't operate many train services, external while it works with Network Rail to investigate the incident.

    The two services that were affected in the Watford derailment were: 

    • 06:10 Milton Keynes – London Euston

    It's been very unsettled across the East, resulting in thunderstorms, heavy rain and lightning strikes.

    There have been several incidents affecting rail services across Suffolk, Cambridgeshire and Hertfordshire as a result of lightning and there are major delays on services via Watford following a landslip.

    Here's the extent of the heavy rainfall at 10:00.

    The thundery conditions are expected to persist today.

    This morning - heavy showers, possibly thundery, are expected to clear eastwards during the afternoon with sunny spells developing. Temperatures will reach 15C (59F).

    Tonight, it's expected to be cloudy with rain persisting, but gradually easing through the night. It will also be rather breezy and will feel less humid than recently. Overnight temperatures will fall to 13C (55F).

    Network Rail says a rescue train is being sent to the scene of this morning's derailment to move passengers. 

    There are conflicting reports as to whether the second train is also still in the Hunton Bridge Tunnel. 

    Herts Fire Service believes 400 passengers could be on both trains.
