Police and Crime Commissioner for Hertfordshire, David Lloyd, has welcomed the huge public support for the injured police dog Finn.
A petition calling for equality between police animals and officers in the eyes of the law - launched shortly after Finn and handler PC Dave Wardell, were stabbed pursuing a suspect - reached more than 100,000 signatures today and could now be debated in parliament.
Mr Lloyd said: “We fully embrace the sentiment behind this petition and support more recognition of the work police animals do.
"Finn is a credit to the service and has been a huge part of the team, not just on this occasion."
The commissioner said the language used in the law “doesn’t feel right” and that a greater understanding of the risks animals and handlers face was needed.
“Hopefully this petition will lead to a wider debate about the way we treat officers and animals when they are attacked," he said.

Wycombe Wanderers striker Adebayo Akinfenwa - also known as The Beast - may have bitten off more than he can chew by challenging former WBA world heavyweight boxing champion David Haye to a bout.
The Hayemaker was being interviewed by Sky Sports when Akinfenwa interrupted to say he was there to "take on Mr Haye any time, any place".
Haye joked that The Beast was his "next opponent".
I'm not sure Wanderers manager Gareth Ainsworth would approve.

The driver convicted of causing death by dangerous driving after he ran over a five-year-old boy in Milton Keynes "should have been alert", the Crown Prosecution said.
David Cowell, 42, was jailed for two years by Aylesbury Crown Court earlier today for killing Riley Ferguson in June 2015 on the driveway in Woodspring Drive, Monkston which at the time he shared with the boy's family.
Gavin Hernandez from the CPS said Cowell maintained that he did not see Riley and had "conducted all reasonable observations" but "there was a child plainly visible at the mouth of the drive as he approached".
"For these reasons he should have been alert to the possibility of another hazard or obstruction and should have proceeded with maximum care and attention," he said.
Speaking at the time of Cowell's conviction, Insp Graeme Hughes of Thames Valley Police, described it as a "tragic case" which "demonstrates that there can be fatal consequences regardless of speed".
