  6. Jordan Palmer 'involuntarily took drug before killing cellmate'published at 15:31 British Summer Time 20 October 2016

    Helen Burchell
    BBC News

The jury at Peterborough Crown Court was told Jordan Palmer, 26, who was serving six years for grievous bodily harm, had complained of feeling unwell shortly before killing his cellmate.

The court heard Terrence Ojuederie, from Watford, was "undeniably smoking Spice" during the course of the night.

Palmer's defence argued he became intoxicated either by inhaling smoke in the cell or by accidentally picking up and smoking a roll-up cigarette which contained Spice, a former 'legal high', instead of tobacco.

The jury accepted he had not intended to take the drug.

However, Judge David Farrell QC told Palmer that being under the influence of the substance did "not totally explain why you did what you did".

He pointed out Palmer had the presence of mind to wash his hands after the attack.

Earlier today Palmer, who was found guilty of manslaughter due to diminished responsibility, was sentenced to 14 years, to run concurrently with his previous jail term.

    BBC News

Jordan Palmer, 26, a prisoner convicted of beating his cellmate to death with a flat screen television in a "brutal" attack, has had a sentence of 14 years added to his previous jail term.

Palmer, 26, attacked 42-year-old Terrence Ojuederie, from Watford, in their cell at HMP Peterborough on 9 December.

During sentencing, Judge David Farrell QC told Palmer: "You subjected Mr Ojuederie to a totally unprovoked and ferocious attack, punching him, kicking him, stamping on him and using a television set as a weapon to inflict serious and fatal injuries to his head and face.

"The cause of death, as the jury heard, was blunt force injuries to the chest and face."

The motion was first proposed by the MP for Bedford and Kempston, Richard Fuller.

The move isn't binding, but it could increase pressure on the Honours Forfeiture Committee to take action.

The woman was driving a VW Golf which collided with another car and a lorry on the A412 Uxbridge Road, near the Crooked Billet roundabout, between Iver and Slough.

    Kate Bradbrook
    BBC Look East

I'm at a real estate conference at Olympia, where Rio Ferdinand has been talking about the plans to regenerate part of Houghton Regis.

Ferdinand, who is working with Luton Borough Council and fellow footballers Bobby Zamora and Mark Noble, wants to build about 1,300 affordable homes along with a brand new sports academy.

"It's really important to reiterate that local people are going to be part of every discussion, every single step that we make," he said.

"I know what it's like when things are said and done about an area that you are from and you've had no participation in that process. It's a holistic approach rather than just us and the council making decisions."
