The partner of Natalie Hemming says he threw a fake £1,000 Faberge egg at her when she told him she'd slept with another man.
Paul Hemming, 43, who denies murder but has admitted manslaughter, says the jade egg hit her on the head and she fell backwards onto the corner of a coffee table at their home in Milton Keynes.
"I knew I had killed her," he told the jury at Luton Crown Court. "I just thought I'm in trouble. How am I going to explain it to the kids upstairs? So then I thought I am going to cover this up."
Mr Hemming admits he wrapped his partner in a rug from the lounge and dumped her body in woodland in Hertfordshire.
The defence will continue its arguments today at Luton Crown Court.

And finally... You love Halloween, but sweets don't quite cut it for you? Well, a giant pumpkin has been converted into a giant vat of beer to raise money for Prostate Cancer UK, external.
The pumpkin - nicknamed Lily - weighed just shy of a quarter of a tonne and was grown at Foxholes Farm in Hertford.
Lily made the trip down the road to the New River Brewery in Hoddesdon, where it was transformed into 3,000 pints of pumpkin beer for Halloween.
The first cask of Pumped Up has gone on sale at a local pub with all funds going to charity, until the cask is empty.
Meanwhile, the used grains from the brewing process are going back the farm to be fed to the cattle, which fertilise the fields where the pumpkins grow... and so the circle continues!

I'm back at Luton Crown Court, where the trial of Paul Hemming for the murder of his partner Natalie is continuing.
Mr Hemming, 43, has denied the murder of Miss Hemming, 31, at their home in Newton Leys, Milton Keynes, last May, but he admits manslaughter.
She was last seen alive in Hemel Hempstead on 1 May. Her body was found in woodland in Chandlers Cross, Hertfordshire, on 22 May.
Today we've heard from pathologist Dr Olaf Biedrzcki, who told the court her body had been subject to "significant decomposition" and due to this he could not tell if there had been any compression to the neck. He said the formal cause of death was "unascertained".
He said a depressed skull fracture in the right temporal region was a "very significant finding", adding the vast majority of these types of injuries were caused by an attack "with a weapon".
Dr Biedrzcki said Miss Hemming also suffered a fracture of the outer left arm which was a "typical defensive injury". An expert bone pathologist concluded she would have been alive when the fracture was sustained.
He said he thought the two injuries would have been caused by "more than one blow".

Families of men convicted under the controversial joint enterprise rule were distraught when a judge at the Court of Appeal refused to allow any appeals, despite a recent change in the law, shouting, "No justice! No peace!"
Among them was the sister of two men convicted for their part in the murder of rapper Isaac Stone, who performed under the name Dynamikk in Bedford.
Fahim Khan, Mohammed Hussain and Murger Begum's brothers, Rubel Miah and Javed Miah (on the right), were jailed in 2014 for their part in the crime.
In February, the Supreme Court ruled that for three decades the courts had been misapplying the test for convicting accomplices who don't inflict the fatal blow.
The decision effectively raised the bar for conviction, saying that accomplices must be proved to have intended to encourage or assist the person who physically killed the victim.
Miss Begum said her brothers, who are serving sentences of 26 and 28 years, are innocent.
Quote MessageNo-one knew that day what was going to happen. They shouldn't be in prison. This is a misleading case, I don't know why they overturned it if they weren't going to allow [appeals]. This hasn't given them what they are looking for."

A rapist who tricked a drunken woman into going back to his flat in Watford has been jailed for six years at St Albans Crown Court.
Ebou Jasseh, 33, of Sutton Road, came across the woman in Watford town centre after she had been ejected from a nightclub in July 2015.
The court heard the defendant told the woman there was a party at his home and she went with him. When the young woman discovered there was no party, she left, but Jasseh persuaded her to return, followed her into the bathroom and raped her.
Quote MessageYou took advantage of a vulnerable young woman who you had enticed into your home for your own gratification. You took advantage of her when she was, to a considerable extent, incapacitated."
