Rail commuters from Bedford, Luton and St Albans are facing another day of disruption on Thameslink services into London.

It follows the damage to overhead wires at Luton on Tuesday afternoon which affected signalling.

Network Rail, external has said it expects disruption to continue until the end of service today, but it may yet continue tomorrow.

Robert McIntosh from the company said: "What we do know is one of our signalling cables did come away.

"What that means in simple terms is that a signalling system that normally carries 24 volts had a sudden injection of 25,000 volts which has caused quite extensive damage, which is why it's taking us so long to put this right."

Protestors held a demonstration outside a council cabinet meeting in Milton Keynes last night, just a week after the death of a third homeless person this year.

The MK People's Assembly has demanded the council hands over empty office space and wants Milton Keynes North MP Mark Lancaster to secure more funding from central government.

Council leader Peter Marland, Labour, said: "We are doing as much as we can and I don't think we can ever do enough to help everybody.

"But the fact is that ultimately a lot of the responsibility for this does not lie with the council. A lot of the responsibility lies with the national policies and the reason why people become homeless in the first place."

On Tuesday afternoon damage was caused to the overhead wires between Luton and London St Pancras International, external

The wires were fixed by Network Rail, but a signalling problem occurred as a result of this damage, causing disruption to journeys to and from London St Pancras.

A special timetable is running until further notice and trains that are able to run are expected to be delayed by up to an hour.

As there is a higher demand for trains it means they're likely to be very busy.
