  9. Gas leak: Homes could be cut off until the weekendpublished at 09:08 Greenwich Mean Time 17 November 2016

    Alex Pope
    BBC Local Live

People affected by Tuesday's gas leak in Ampthill are being urged to use electricity heaters sparingly - as overuse could cause a power cut.

Anthony Quarrell, from National Grid, says if all of the 6,000 properties without gas in Ampthill, Clophill and Maulden turned on an electric heater it could trip the system, meaning no power at all.

    Construction site

He says engineers are having to go to every house in the area to turn off individual gas supplies. He says it would help if people could be at home today.

Extra staff have been brought in to help, and they hope gas could be restored by the weekend, as work is "going well".

I'm at Maulden Village Hall, which has become a 24-hour crisis centre for those affected by Tuesday's gas leak.

It is being staffed by volunteers, Central Beds Council and the National Grid.

One of the residents seeking advice is Susan, who runs a local nursery school.

As people are being told not to over-use electric heaters, she's trying to find out if she can claim for an oil fired heater. She was told to contact her gas supplier.

Susan said everyone is helping each other, and most people are trying to find friends in Flitwick so they can have hot showers.

All in all, she said it's been a bit of a "nightmare".
