Parents have been sending their children back to Southwood School this morning, despite the sports hall ceiling collapsing yesterday and leaving one child in hospital.

They've been telling me they believe the school is safe, even though dropping them off has "felt hard".

Veronica had two children in the hall when it fell and said "you can't image what I went through". Her son told me the ceiling came down "right next to him", but he's fine.

Her daughter described hearing a "really loud noise" and finding it "really scary". She then said the "teachers got us out and had to call an ambulance".

One father also told me he was "relieved" his nine-year-old daughter was OK, so she's back in class today.

He didn't question the school for opening, saying: "I'm sure they know what to do".

It happened yesterday afternoon during an after-school club.

Headteacher Elaine Hawkins was visibly upset when I spoke to her, but she wants it known to parents that the school is open today as normal, it's been checked by health and safety officials and the sports hall is cordoned off.

She added that yesterday was "not an easy day, not a day we would want again".

"We now want the children back in school, so we can give them our help and care to get them through a difficult situation," said Ms Hawkins.
