  7. Man jailed for attempted murder was in 'irrational frame of mind'published at 12:53 British Summer Time 27 April 2017

Farai Kambarani was also convicted at Luton Crown Court of criminal damage and stalking his former partner.

The defence said Kambarani was depressed and in an "unusual and irrational frame of mind", but has recognised the awfulness of what he has done.

Jailing him, Judge Philip Bartle QC said: "You became fixated with Ruth [Nayamazana] and saw her as an obstacle to you seeing your daughter - there was no justification for that whatsoever."

Judge Bartle said that in a victim personal statement Ms Nayamazanan said she still lives in fear.

The judge passed a 22-year custodial sentence with a 3-year extension, when Kambarani will be released on licence.

The judge also made a restraining order banning Kambarani from contacting his estranged wife or Ms Nyamazana for life.

    Sarah Jenkins
    BBC Local Live

A man who attempted to kill his estranged wife's aunt in a Milton Keynes car park has been sentenced to 22 years in prison.

Farai Kambarani, 26, of Ashfield Road, Wolverhampton, was found guilty of attempting to kill social worker Ruth Nayamazana, whom he wrongly blamed for not being able to see his child.

Luton Crown Court heard Kambarani shunted a car into the back of the victim's vehicle in the Saxon Gate car park in Milton Keynes city centre, just after 08:00 on 22 August last year.

When Ms Nayamazana got out of the vehicle, he punched her in the head 10 to 20 times before running a knife across her throat.

Speaking in the witness box, Ms Nayamazana said: "He moved the knife up and down. I was screaming. I thought he was going to cut my throat. The blood started gushing out."

Two months before the attack, Ms Nyamazana said Kambarani had come to her home and was "furious and angry".

She told the jury: "He said 'You have stopped me seeing my child. You don't want me to see my child. Who do you think you are?'"

Mrs Nyamazana said he punched a glass panel on her front door and smashed it.

  11. Watercress worry over low water levelspublished at 10:55 British Summer Time 27 April 2017

    Katy Lewis
    BBC Local Live

Yesterday we told you that environmentalists were warning there could be a drought in the south this summer.

Now, the owner of E Tyler & Sons, a Hertfordshire watercress farm that's been in the same family for more than 120 years, has said it could go out of business if water levels don't improve.

Jon Tyler, whose great-great grandfather set up the farm in Sarratt in the 1800s, says the bore holes are at the lowest level he's ever seen.

In one of these holes, instead of water flowing, it's "being sucked down" which he's never seen before and half of his watercress beds are now empty.

"It's just frightening at the moment because we haven't had the rainfall at all through the winter months...  we've just got to pray for some rain now really," he said.

"All these houses and everything that are being built, and the sheer demand for water that's being pumped up - it's a big drain on the system."

Affinity Water has said that since July 2016, the region had received just over half of the normal rainfall that we would usually expect.

"Our ground water sources have also been affected by the low rainfall, which is where 60% of the water we supply to our customers comes from," a spokesman said.

"We are encouraging our customers to save water to help preserve supplies and minimise the possibility of restrictions this summer."

  13. Coach company apologises after marathon mix-uppublished at 10:40 British Summer Time 27 April 2017

    Tony Fisher
    BBC Three Counties Radio

A group of London marathon runners had a race to the start line, let alone the finish, on Sunday after the Bedfordshire coach company they had booked to take them to London failed to turn up.

Barton Coaches has apologised after more than 40 runners and spectators were left stranded after transport did not pick them up in Luton.

The organiser of the trip - Dave Coard - said the inability to carry out a pre-paid booking resulted in a very stressful day for 24 runners and 20 spectators. Luckily all the runners made it in time for the start, but not without a great deal of inconvenience, having to either drive themselves or take the train.

Barton Coaches says the freelance driver couldn't access the yard, because the company's security man failed to turn up to unlock the gates. Then the driver went home without informing anyone.

It has refunded the money paid for the booking.

A spokesman said: "The disastrous failure to pick [them] up on Sunday is both hugely embarrassing and somewhat inexplicable.

"Obviously the driver concerned (who is freelance and not an employee of Barton Coach Company) will never work for the company again and we fully understand that no amount of apologising or explanations will make up for ruining what should have been such a special day."

  14. High Court backing for Berkhamsted car parkpublished at 09:24 British Summer Time 27 April 2017

    Lee Agnew
    BBC Three Counties Radio

An attempt to stop a multi-storey car park being built in Berkhamsted town centre has been thrown out by the High Court after a judge ruled that Dacorum Borough Council was acting within its rights to grant permission for it.

Campaigners have described the 327-space car park off Lower Kings Road - adjacent to an existing Waitrose car park - as an "enormous" and "monolithic" development in the middle of a conversation area.

Their lawyers claimed the council was wrong to conclude that the market town doesn't have enough parking as there are already 444 council car parking spaces in the town, as well as 484 at the railway station car park and 195 at Waitrose.

But ruling on the case, Mrs Justice Lang said the council's decision "cannot be criticised as irrational or otherwise unlawful" and refused to open the way for a full judicial review.

  17. Milton Keynes regeneration: 'No guarantees' over homespublished at 08:22 British Summer Time 27 April 2017

    Katy Lewis
    BBC Local Live

Milton Keynes Council's corporate director has vowed to "find a solution" for every family after plans for a £1bn regeneration programme were announced, but there are "no guarantees".

Fullers Slade Milton KeynesImage source, YourMK

The 15-year project, which will affect 20,000 people, will begin with work at Fullers Slade (pictured) but some residents fear they may lose their homes.

Duncan Sharkey said: "If someones's got a property that they privately own and are very happy there, we will talk to them about what we need to do on the estate... if that affects their property, that will be an individual discussion with that person.

"There's no guarantee of anything right now, because we don't know what the regeneration plan looks like.

"What we want to make sure is that we're talking to everyone individually if they are affected and we will find a solution for them."

Meanwhile, Milton Keynes planning consultant, David Lock has said the problem is that the plans are unclear.

He said: "Is this a programme to squeeze more houses in? Is it a programme to help people get jobs and sort their lives out?

"Is it a programme to demolish the whole lot and squeeze more in... and so on?

"This is all unclear and the language is, 'we don't know, you tell us' which means that nobody has any sense yet of the direction of travel."
