The Liberal Democrats have confirmed their General Election candidate for Luton South has been suspended from the party over alleged anti-Semitic comments on Twitter.
As reported by the Daily Mail, external yesterday, Ashuk Ahmed (pictured) was due to contest the seat held by Labour's Gavin Shuker. He stood for the Lib Dems in the constituency in 2015 and finished fourth behind Labour, the Conservatives and UKIP.
A party spokesman said any instance of anti-Semitism by a candidate in the campaign would be dealt with "immediately and robustly".
"We were alerted to anti-Semitic social media posts by Ashuk Ahmed, the Liberal Democrat candidate in Luton South, who was immediately suspended," a spokesman said.
The leader of the Liberal Democrats on Luton Borough Council, David Franks, said: "The allegations are as yet unproven... if they are proved to be correct, then there is no space in the Liberal Democrats for him or that kind of attitude."
I have contacted Mr Ahmed for comment.
