The second man accused of a murder in Stevenage when a flat screen TV was used as a weapon has chosen not to go into the witness box.

Peter Shickle, 58, was found lying in a pool of blood at his flat in Silam Road on 6 November 2016.

Graham King, 36, from Harrow Court in the town, and John Jamieson 36, from Wigram Way deny charges of murder.

Today at Luton Crown Court, Mr King's lawyer Abbas Lakha QC, said there was no evidence that he went into Mr Shickle's flat to cause him serious harm.

Earlier in the trial, Mr Jamieson said he thought Mr Shickle had a Stankley knife in his hand when he swung the TV at him, hitting him twice.

Mr King's defence said earlier evidence suggested the only thing his client did was to kick Mr Shickle to release the dead man's grip on Mr Jamieson.

    The case continues.

  8. Verulamium: Roman 'Great Pottery Throw Down' secrets uncoveredpublished at 14:45 British Summer Time 11 May 2017

    Katy Lewis
    BBC Local Live

Last month we told you how "significant" archaeological finds from the Roman town of Verulamium had been uncovered during gas main works in St Albans.

Verulamium was the third largest city in Roman Britain, external and has been mapped by various excavations over the years - the new holes revealed the location of the corner of the town wall and a previously unknown house which led archaeologists to redraw the map of the city.

Well, now more of its secrets have been discovered by archaeologists during the works.

The burnt remains of a 1,800-year-old potter's kiln have been unearthed.

It is the fifth kiln to be found at the historic site close to the others, which were found when the Abbey View running track was built in the late 1980s.

The kiln’s burnt remains have given the soil a deep red-orange colour while some shards of broken pottery, known as wasters, were also detected.

District archaeologist Simon West said: "The pottery kiln is another exciting discovery that gives us a greater understanding of how Verulamium was set up.

"The old gas main would appear to cut through the middle of it.

"It is further evidence of just how advanced and productive the Romans who settled in Verulamium all those centuries ago were.

"The relaying of the gas pipe gave us a chance to discover new things about our past and we are certainly doing that."
