The inquest has resumed into the death of Michael Cameron, who died at HMP Woodhill.
The jury in Milton Keynes heard the 45-year-old had been arrested on 18 April 2016 on suspicion of attempted murder.
It was told Mr Cameron was taken to Milton Keynes police station where he was put on constant watch.
There he punched walls, headbutted the door and his behaviour was aggressive, the inquest heard. He also tied clothing around his neck and told police officers he would be dead before he got to court, the jury was told.
Det Sgt Phil Walsh told the court that Mr Cameron told officers: "I'm going to prison for this... I deserve to go to prison."
