The Competition and Markets Authority, external (CMA) will assess whether the tie-up could reduce choice for shoppers and for small stores supplied by Booker.

The CMA has announced the first phase of its investigation into the deal which will run until 25 July. It has asked for interested parties to submit their views by 13 June.

After this first phase, the CMA will either clear the takeover or submit it for a more in-depth investigation, unless Tesco and Booker take steps to counter any competition issues identified.

Bedfordshire Police has thanked the public for making Sunday's Luton Carnival a safe event.

Armed police and sniffer dogs were deployed on the streets following last year's stabbings and arrests on the night of the carnival.

However, Bedfordshire Police said this year's event took place without any major incidents.

Chief Constable Jon Boutcher said: "In any given year, the Carnival is one of our busiest and most unpredictable days to police – yet against the recent backdrop of the terrorist atrocities in both Manchester and Westminster, and the rise and return of the threat level from Critical back to Severe, this was an even bigger challenge for us all.

"We had reviewed our policing arrangements in light of the terror threat change and it was great to see our presence welcomed by so many."

  10. Phone scam: How a gang convinced elderly people to part with their moneypublished at 12:37 British Summer Time 30 May 2017

More on that gang of fraudsters who've been jailed.....

A gang of seven scammed elderly residents by calling them and telling them they were police officers.

    Cambridge Crown Court

Hertfordshire Police said the callers would falsely inform the victims that they had people in custody - usually the victims’ grandchildren - in connection with fraudulent use of their bank account or cards.

The victims, aged between 60 and 93, were then asked to attend a bank and withdraw large sums of cash as part of a fictitious investigation.

This money was then collected from the victims by a courier.

The victims lost out on a total of £32,000.

Det Sgt Jon Leak said: "Phone scams can have a devastating effect on the victims, as they often lose vast sums of money as well as their confidence and trust.

"I hope this sentence serves as a warning that we will continue to do everything in our power to disrupt, identify and bring these offenders to justice."
