  1. Calls for Luton shopping centre to work with club over developmentpublished at 13:38 British Summer Time 26 June 2017

One of Luton's MPs has called for the owners of the Mall shopping centre to work with Luton Town Football Club in a dispute over what should happen on land where a new stadium has been proposed.

Ken Ford, the executive director of Capital and Regional, which owns the Mall, attended a public meeting in the town on Friday night and confirmed a rival planning application for the Power Court site - owned by the club.

Capital and Regional is hoping to develop the area with new shops, restaurants, homes, various work spaces and urban parkland. Its proposals would see the new football stadium in Stockwood Park.

Luton South MP Gavin Shuker said the move by Capital and Regional could mean nothing is done on the land for years.

"The choice is in Capital and Regional's hands. Rather than adding years to the project, I think they would be better off finding a way for the schemes to work together.

"That was the clear message of the meeting."

We've contacted Capital and Regional for further comment.

We've just heard from Luton Crown Court, where two men have been jailed for their part in the death of a Luton man in a row over a dog.

Serving prisoner Stewart Docherty has been sentenced to life in prison, with a minimum term of 20 years and six months, for the murder of Henry Huggins - who spent 22 months in a coma before he died.

Docherty's co-accused James Early, who was found guilty of manslaughter, was sentenced to five and a half years.

Mr Huggins, 48, was attacked by the pair outside his flat on Whipperley Ring in 2013.

He suffered catastrophic brain injuries and died almost two years later. He never regained consciousness.

The court heard how Early delivered punches which sent Mr Huggins falling backwards, hitting his head on hard cement. He fled the scene while Docherty stamped on and kicked his victims' head, leaving him with injuries from which he never recovered.

In 2014, Docherty (left), 42, of Townley, Luton, admitted causing grievous bodily harm, and Early (right), 43, was convicted of causing actual bodily harm.

Both were jailed and Docherty had been serving a sentence of 12 years, while Early, of Whipperley Ring, Luton, had served a two and a half year sentence.

When Mr Huggins died in June 2015, the pair were re-arrested on charges of murder and manslaughter and were found guilty earlier this month.

At today's sentencing, Judge Richard Foster told the court the judge who dealt with the case previously described it as "an appalling act of violence and cowardice which was a heinous and wicked act".

    "I agree," he said.

"I am satisfied that although the assaults were not racially motivated, there was nevertheless a background to the dispute regarding the dog which included an element of unpleasant racial abuse."

A Hungarian man who twice stabbed a pregnant work colleague at a Luton factory was sentenced to a indefinite term in a mental hospital today.

Szalo Szabolcs, 30, of Dunstable Road, Luton, was suffering from paranoid schizophrenia when he attacked the woman at Pratt's Bananas in Laporte Way.

He pleaded guilty to causing grievous bodily harm with intent on 26 June last year.

The prosecution accepted his plea of not guilty to attempted murder. He appeared for sentence at Luton Crown Court from a medium secure mental unit, Brockfield House in Essex.

The court heard the victim greeted Szabolcs as they passed on the factory floor.

He then turned back and stabbed her twice - in the shoulders and on the lower back - with a kitchen knife that had a 10.5cm (4in) blade.

She thought she had been punched, had difficulty in breathing and became unconscious, the court heard.

She was taken to hospital and treated for two stab wounds. One of her lungs collapsed and she underwent surgery to save her life.

In a victim personal statement the woman, whose baby survived, said the attack had a profound effect on her.

  5. Hamilton calls Vettel 'a disgrace' after Azerbaijan GP collisionpublished at 10:11 British Summer Time 26 June 2017

    BBC Sport

Lewis Hamilton called title rival Sebastian Vettel "a disgrace" after the Ferrari driver drove into his car in the Azerbaijan Grand Prix in Baku.

The two clashed before one of three restarts in a chaotic race - Vettel hitting the back of Hamilton's Mercedes and then swerving sideways into him.

Vettel said Hamilton had deliberately slowed - or "brake-tested" - him.

The Briton denied that and said Vettel's driving was "disgusting" and "not sportsman's conduct".

Vettel, of Germany, was given a 10-second stop-and-go penalty in the race - won by Red Bull's Daniel Ricciardo - after being found guilty of dangerous driving, but still finished a place ahead of Hamilton in fourth, extending his championship lead to 14 points.

Valtteri Bottas, Hamiton's team-mate at Brackley-based Mercedes, finished second ahead of the Williams of Canadian Lance Stroll.
